The Markup
The Markup is an innovative journalism organization composed of individuals skilled in examining the implications of new technologies and explaining them clearly to everyday people. Our approach is rooted in science and data. We form hypotheses and gather information through crowdsourcing, Freedom of Information requests, and by analyzing publicly available data to uncover important stories. We share our findings on our own website as well as through collaborations with other media outlets. Our work will be available in various formats, including written articles, podcasts, radio segments, and videos. As a nonprofit newsroom, we publish our content under a Creative Commons license, allowing others to share our work freely. Whenever feasible, we also make available the data and code from our investigations, along with a comprehensive methodology that details the data sources and statistical methods we used. This transparency aims to enable academics, journalists, policymakers, and others to assess our data, replicate our findings, and expand upon our research. The Markup's website prioritizes reader privacy by avoiding third-party tracking. We aim to collect minimal personal information from our audience and will never sell this data.
