The origins of The Pike County News Watchman trace back to the early 1800s, possibly around the establishment of Jefferson (now known as Piketon), which became the first government seat of Pike County in 1814. However, details from this early period in Pike County's history are a bit hazy. The first known newspaper in the area was the Waverly Democrat, launched in 1832, which catered to the needs of the early Democratic community in the county, as suggested by its name.

Tigers grind out 1-0 victory over Amanda-Clearcreek

Pitching has been a strength for the Waverly Tigers in the 2025 varsity baseball season, but sometimes the offense hasn’t come. In Wednesday night’s non-league contest with Amanda-Clearcreek, the Tigers were able to grind out a 1-0 victory behind freshman Braylon Spriggs’ complete game shutout. Spriggs allowed five hits and struck out nine in the win. From the dish, he generated the lone RBI to help his own cause, finishing 2-3 with a double and a stolen base.

It’s an event that’s been a long time coming. The inaugural Eastern High School Invitational track and field meet was on the schedule in 2024, but inclement weather prevented it from happening. The weather has been anything but cooperative throughout this spring season as well, but on Wednesday, May 7, the temperatures were pleasant and those who stayed until the end of the meet had the opportunity to witness a dramatic-looking sunset and the first invitational ever at Eastern High School.

Voters in Pike County only had one ballot measure to vote on in the May 6 Primary Election unless they lived in Ward 4 of Waverly. Residents in that precinct had two measures to decide. The minimal number of issues on the ballot kept many people away from the polls, rather than attracting voters to come out and vote. Only 701 ballots were cast in a county with more than 18,000 registered voters. The voter turnout was 3.87% in Pike County.
Piketon opens school-based health center

PIKETON — On Thursday, April 24, Scioto Valley Local School District (SVLSD) announced a partnership with Valley View Health, with support from the Community Action Committee of Pike County, the Appalachian Children’s Coalition and Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
