PUNXSUTAWNEY — On Tuesday — Patriots Day, a commemoration of “the shot heard ‘round the world” that started the Revolutionary War 250 years ago — opponents of the Donald Trump administration staged protests across the country. That included the Jefferson County Democratic Committee, which brought a group of approximately 30 people to Barclay Square in the afternoon during a sunny break between bouts of rain that struck elsewhere in the area.
World Pizza Champions present at IUP Culinary

PUNXSUTAWNEY — IUP Academy of Culinary Arts alumni Pete Tolman did a presentation this week for the current students on promoting pizza-making as a respected craft and viable career choice. Tolman demonstrated his Detroit-style pizza, which he introduced to the Pittsburgh area in 2016, in the IUP cafeteria at the Punxsy campus. Tolman owns Iron Born Pizza. He has two locations in Pittsburgh. Scott Anthony, Punxsy Pizza owner, assisted in the demonstration.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It was an exciting night at Punxsutawney Area High School in the James A. Colonna Performance Hall as the induction ceremony for the National Junior Honor Society was held in front a lot of very proud parents, siblings and friends. PAHS Assistant Principal Kyle Gordon gave the opening address. Gordon said it was truly an honor to stand before everyone as they marked a significant milestone for these exceptional young individuals.
Grant funds Punxsy Christian School trip to Gettysburg

The students of the Punxsutawney Christian School were afforded the opportunity to walk the fields of hallowed history at Gettysburg on April 4, thanks to the American Battlefield Trust’s History Field Trip Grant program. The trip provided students with hands-on learning opportunities. The grants are awarded based on a competitive, national application process, and this process demonstrated history, math, and reading teacher Deanna Venturini’s commitment to excellence in the classroom.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting at the Punxsutawney Area School District administration building recently to unveil the new fingerprinting service they are introducing to the public. Dr. Curt Vasas, assistant to the superintendent, said that as of March 27, it is now offering IdentoGO fingerprinting services to both employees and the community.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — As we get closer to Sunday’s Run or Walk for Someone Special in Sykesville, this past Wednesday the Punxsutawney Christian School (PCS) held their own Run or Walk in Barclay Square. This year, the school raised $1,322 which will go directly to the Run or Walk in Sykesville. The Run or Walk in Sykesville gets underway at 1 p.m. onSunday.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A very familiar figure who was heavily involved in the Punxsutawney community, Peter Paul Pape, of Pine Street, Punxsutawney, passed away April 9, 2025, at Christ the King Manor in DuBois. Pape was heavily involved in the Punxsutawney Fire Department and specifically the Lindsey Fire Company. As a 63-year member of the Lindsey Fire Department, he held the offices of President and Chaplain and he was the Chairman of the committee for the building of the new Lindsey Fire Hall.
2025 Variety Show performances begin today

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The weather may not seem like spring, but another sure sign is the Punxsutawney Area High School Variety Show, which gets underway tonight at the James Colonna Performing Arts Center and runs through Saturday. The directors for this year’s program are Trent Hoover, Emily Bussard, Kaden Heigley and Emily Wisnesky. The theme for this year’s program is “The Good Old Days.”The show begins at 7 p.m. The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and you can purchase tickets right up until showtime.
