PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Van Dyke and Co. Dance Studio will hold its 2025 Dance Showcase featuring the ballet “Graduation Ball.”Artistic Director Joan Van Dyke said the show is a full-length ballet with music by Johanne Strause. She said the ballet is centered on an all-girls school in Vienna that gets together with a military school once a year and puts on a ball. She said the various grade levels are represented in the ballet. She said the last time they performed the ballet was in 2001.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board accepted the resignation of the assistant to the superintendent at Tuesday’s voting meeting. The board approved the resignation of Dr. Curt Vasas, the assistant to the superintendent, Dr. Thomas Lesniewski, who is also leaving the district soon, as he retires at the end of the school year. Vasas had a prior connection to Lesniewski and began his position with Punxsutawney back in July 2021.

Punxsy native begins work in Office of the Secretary of Homeland Security

Daniel Kunselman, a 22-year-old native of Punxsutawney, was officially sworn in to serve in the Office of the Secretary of Homeland Security. He joins the department as a special assistant to the senior counselor on border security and immigration. At 22, Kunselman is among the youngest political appointees currently serving in the administration — and the youngest at the Department of Homeland Security.

YOUNG TWP. — The Punxsutawney Fire Department was dispatched to a two-vehicle accident with entrapment that occurred at 4:05 p.m. Monday at the intersection of Harmony Road and Adrian Road, Young Township. When Punxsutawney firefighters arrived on the scene, they found a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck and a Ford Bronco that were involved in a collision, which caused the Bronco to slide over the guiderail with the back end hanging over a gully and the driver entrapped in the vehicle.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Representatives of Tri-County Transportation approached the Punxsutawney Area School Board at their committee meeting regarding flexible instruction days and how they affect the transportation provider for the district. Bob Koban, Tri-County Transportation vice president and Amanda Horvath, facility manager, were requesting payment for flexible instruction days when students were not transported. Koban thanked the board for allowing them to discuss their request.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Area School Board had a budget review at their committee meeting on Thursday, where they learned that the deficit has been trimmed by $1.8 million. Susan H. Robertson, Punxsutawney Area School District business manager, said that the budget as presented for the proposed 2025-2026 general fund showed revenues of $47,282,917 and expenditures of $50,270,100, which was down from the $4.7 million deficit at last month’s presentation.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A beloved member of the Punxsutawney community, former Groundhog Club Inner Circle President Bill Deeley, passed away this week at the age of 75 after having been ill for the last several months. Tom Dunkel, current Inner Circle president, said Bill was great with the Groundhog Club, but he was a lot more than that. “A great man for Punxsutawney, great father and great businessman,” Dunkel said.
