PUNXSUTAWNEY — “School’s out for the summer” — so says that famous song by Alice Cooper, and here in Punxsutawney the weather is starting to heat up. Coinciding with that is the opening Tuesday of the George C. Brown Community Pool. Alex Dobson, president of SPLASH (Save Punxy’s Local Area Swimming Hole), said so long as the water passes all the tests they will be open to the public today.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It’s always one of the earliest Vacation Bible Schools in the area and this year they’re bringing back the Day Camp at First Church of God in Punxsutawney/Young Township. Ashlynn Starr, camp director, said it is being held June 9, 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Punxsutawney First Church of God, 23 Skyview Drive. “This year, the church will be using a camping theme and teaching children how to ‘Live It Out and Discover How to Love Like Jesus,’” Starr said.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — All three Punxsutawney fire companies were dispatched to a vehicle fire endangering a structure in the alley behind McDonald’s at 102 N. Findley St., Punxsutawney, at 5 p.m. Sunday. Elk Run’s Ladder-30 and Central’s Engine-20-1 arrived on the scene to find a recreational vehicle with fire and smoke in the engine compartment, which they were able to knock down, keeping the fire from spreading to any nearby structures.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Now that school is out for the summer, if you’re looking for something that your kids can do, how about visiting the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center? Lisa Waksmunski, Weather Center executive director, said that summer is just around the corner, and at the Weather Discovery Center they’re looking forward to some fun programs and fundraisers that they have planned for their visitors.

OLIVER TWP. —The Oliver Township Volunteer Fire Company announced that their new TAC 5 is officially in service. Mike Coleman, Oliver Township Fire chief, said TAC stands for tactical which means it is set up to do a variety of emergency calls. “We can cut trees, cut cars, take care of medical calls, and it has air packs on it, its a truck that will do a little bit of everything,” Coleman said. “Plus, with a five man cab on it we can haul more manpower.”
