Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez visited Ripon last week Thursday morning to see several businesses and ask how the state could help to grow their businesses. “The lieutenant governor’s office reached out last week to arrange a visit to Patina Vie in recognition of National Small Business Week and Wisconsin’s ongoing efforts to support small businesses,” Ripon Main Street Executive Director Craig Tebon said.

Every Monday a protest blossoms on the sidewalk in front of the Little White Schoolhouse. It is to protest current policies and actions of President Donald Trump’s administration, with a great preponderance of Democrats, with a few unhappy Republicans and political neutrals as well. The protest is the brainchild of Ripon’s Matthew and Becky Davis. They both attend other protests in the Fox Valley area and Matthew wondered why he couldn’t find any protests closer to Ripon.

The Markesan Police Department has a new chief, Doug Wiorek, who is a retired police sergeant from the Milwaukee area. He replaces the retiring Will Pflum, who left the department after 26 years of service to the community. Wiorek started in 1988 as a volunteer and part-time officer for the city of Eagle Lake, Minn., while gaining experience and working his way through college.

Diverse Options celebrated its 50th anniversary last week Wednesday with an open house. The facility located on Fenton Street, where adults with learning disabilities can train for jobs, featured music, decorations, games of skill, food and a big cake to mark the occasion. Staff members conducted tours of the facility, showing off training areas, as well as production facilities, where workers practice learning how to hold a job.

Rural homelessness is a hidden problem for social service organizations, but ADVOCAP and Mandy Kimes are trying to shine a light on it. Kimes hosted a meeting last week Wednesday that was sponsored by the Ripon/Green Lake subcommittee of the Winnebagoland Housing Coalition, which encompasses Green Lake, Fond du Lac and Winnebago counties, at the Ripon Public Library to discuss the problem and offer solutions.
