Former head of West Virginia's economic development urges Trump to preserve clean energy tax credits

Mitch Carmichael, the former secretary of economic development in West Virginia, is spearheading a new ad campaign urging President Donald Trump to preserve energy tax credits that he says are vital to creating jobs and growing business in West Virginia. The clean energy tax credits in question were enacted by Congress under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The U.S. House of Representatives voted last month, while considering the massive government spending bill, to cut them.

MARTINSBURG — Two games into the regular season, Brayden Edwards seems to have found his special spot in Berkeley Post 14’s American Legion baseball team’s lineup. Edwards, who hails from Washington High, batted third in the order for the Martinsburg-based team on Tuesday in the home opener against Francis Scott Key Post 11 (Frederick, Md.) at Faulkner Field.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — For the second time in the last three years, Hedgesville's baseball team played the roll of spoiler against Jefferson in postseason regional play, ending the Cougars' season. The Eagles, after falling behind by one game in the best-of-three Class 4A, Region II championship series, won two straight to take the series and punch their ticket to Charleston. Hedgesville delivered the knockout punch on Saturday at Sager Field, ousting the Cougars, 4-2.

The Cougars faced just that prior to the start of Thursday’s Game 1 of the best-of-three Class 4A, Region II championship series with Hedgesville at Sager Field. Noticeably missing from the starting lineup were center fielder Sam Hefner, right fielder Liam Healey and Jett Gross.

At least 13 organizations espousing hateful, extreme or antigovernment rhetoric were active in West Virginia in 2024, according to a report issued last week by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Per the SPLC’s 2024 Year in Hate and Extremism report, eight of those groups were local while five were considered to be active statewide. The groups vary from neo-nazi and white supremacist groups to organizations that are generally anti-government and militias.
