MARTINSBURG — Koi Fagan looked, he saw and he conquered. When Fagan stood in the shotgun at quarterback for Martinsburg late in a tie game for the Class AAAA state championship, the senior, using his imagination, viewed nothing but a wide-open field in front of him. He didn’t see a single defender from the Spring Mills team that allowed just three points per game and posted nine shutouts in 14 games. Fagan’s gaze into his personal crystal ball of sorts proved right.

MARTINSBURG -- Try as Huntington might to try to contain Martinsburg standout quarterback and Kennedy Award candidate Koi Fagan, the senior showed up just in the nick of time for the Bulldogs. Fagan finally escaped the Highlanders' grasp on a 47-yard run to set up the go-ahead touchdown, got his hands on a running back trying to score a two-point conversion in the final minute and finally secured an onside kick as Martinsburg held on for a 35-34 victory.

MARTINSBURG -- There was a shooting Friday night in the neighborhood outside of Martinsburg's Walker Stadium. The shots rang out right after the national anthem. Then Martinsburg shot down visiting Huntington 47-15 in a game matching the top two teams in the state by one poll and teams that played in the Class AAA semifinals in each of the previous two seasons. The Highlanders prevailed two seasons ago and Martinsburg last year as the respective winners claimed state titles a week later.

SPRING MILLS — Max Anderson learned a hard lesson over the summer about the fragility of life. “It was crazy,” is how the Spring Mills senior quarterback and point guard described the whole event. Anderson was preparing to join his Spring Mills basketball teammates for a summer game in the Capitol Hoops League when he received some disturbing news. “I go a text saying, ‘he got lost in the river,’” Anderson said. Later, the news grew worse.
