While Jefferson is running away with first place in the Eastern Panhandle Athletic Conference and the likely top seed for the Class AAAA, Region II tournament, the rest of the baseball teams are scrambling for positioning. Right now, it's anybody's game in the 2-6 positions. In fact, five of the six EPAC teams are receiving votes in a state media poll and four are in the top 10, led by No. 1 Jefferson. None of the six can make any inroads in the standings this weekend, however.

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Hedgesville had Jefferson's number on the baseball diamond. The Eagles had defeated the Cougars five straight times, including a pair of playoff wins in 2023 when Hedgesville played in the Class AAA state championship game and continued with a 5-4, eight-inning victory earlier this season. "The last few years have been rough against Hedgesville," Jefferson pitcher Alex Danner said.

When Fagan stood in the shotgun at quarterback for Martinsburg late in a tie game for the Class AAAA state championship, the senior, using his imagination, viewed nothing but a wide-open field in front of him. He didn’t see a single defender from the Spring Mills team that allowed just three points per game and posted nine shutouts in 14 games. Fagan’s gaze into his personal crystal ball of sorts proved right.

MARTINSBURG -- Try as Huntington might to try to contain Martinsburg standout quarterback and Kennedy Award candidate Koi Fagan, the senior showed up just in the nick of time for the Bulldogs. Fagan finally escaped the Highlanders' grasp on a 47-yard run to set up the go-ahead touchdown, got his hands on a running back trying to score a two-point conversion in the final minute and finally secured an onside kick as Martinsburg held on for a 35-34 victory.
