    Although Upson-Lee track was hampered heavily by prom scheduled the same day as the sectional track meet, several U-L names still topped the board at the end of the day in Peach County on Saturday. Jayden Skelton backed up his region championship 200-dash run with a sectional victory in the same event. Skelton finished with a time of 21.43, just a couple tenths slower than his region run. However, Skelton still finished nearly a half-second better than the closest competitor.

    Following last week’s meeting of Thomaston-Upson Industrial Development Authority, Chairman Chase Fallin issued a statement clarifying expenses related to a trip to Ashley, Ind., to tour Brightmark’s plant prior to the company investing in Upson County. “After reading [an article] in the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, I want to make sure… one thing mentioned was about us taking our trip to Ashley in the past… I want to make sure it’s clear that the IDA paid for our trip to Indiana,” Fallin commented.

    Upson Regional Medical Center hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony prior to its family fun day on Saturday to celebrate a new pediatric partnership with Kids Alliance for Better Care, or KidsABC. The partnership brings together multiple entities, including Mercer University School of Medicine, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Rural Health Innovation Center to help advance pediatric care to children in rural areas.

    Dylan, Jim, and Justin Gilbert, along with Randy Oglesbee, fended off four other teams in a playoff to win Thomaston Golf Association’s annual fundraising tournament at Raintree Golf Club on Saturday. Four teams finished 17 under par after 18 holes, with the final playoff coming down to three more holes to determine the winners. The tournament featured 24 teams competing in a four-man scramble. Funds raised by the tournament go toward the Upson-Lee golf program.

    Prior to a 4-1 vote to deny rezoning for Serenity Lake, Upson Planning Director Doug Currier recommended conditional approval of rezoning for the high-end development, citing “a huge loophole” in the county’s current ordinance. During his presentation, Currier concluded the proposed development is “well planned and intended to be high quality,” and noted that Upson’s comprehensive plan expresses a need for housing.
