Global wood-based panel manufacturing giant Kronospan will now produce sawn timber products for the first time following the acquisition of Ziegler Group’s Sebeș sawmill. Kronospan announced on March 3 that it had agreed to acquire the ZG Timber’s Sebeș plant in a move which ensures the continuity of operations at the facility, safeguarding 500 local jobs following the insolvency of Ziegler Holding GmbH at the end of 2024.

Timber sector organisations have welcomed the Government’s new commitment to the Timber in Construction Roadmap following an important summit in central London. New, ambitious plans to increase the use of timber in construction to boost the domestic timber industry, economic growth, rural jobs and housebuilding targets, were announced by UK Environment Minister Mary Creagh at the Timber in Construction (TiC) Summit in London on February 27.

Timber treater WJ Group has announced it is opening its latest preservative treatment site at the Port of Creeksea, Essex. The new site comes through a partnership with Baltic Distribution. The move marks a significant expansion in WJ Group’s national timber treatment capabilities. WJ Group said the new facility reinforced its commitment to providing high-quality preservative timber treatment solutions while increasing efficiency and capacity to meet growing demand.

The assets of a Suffolk garden office manufacturer are being auctioned off after the company entered liquidation due to an increasingly challenging and competitive market. BPI Asset Advisory is managing the online auction of assets of Thurston-based SMART Offices Limited, which entered liquidation on February 5. The company, established in 2006, built a reputation as a leading manufacturer of modular garden rooms, offering a full turnkey solution.

The Crowne Plaza in Liverpool was the setting for a Northwest Timber Trade Association (NWTTA) annual dinner on February 26, that experienced a revival with more than 250 attendees, many raving about a fulfilling evening of entertainment and fine food. Nearly £4,000 was raised for industry charity the Timber Trades’ Benevolent Society (TTBS), which is a record for r the annual event, while comedy was provided from ‘The Chase’ star and comedian Paul Sinha.
