    A new high-tech commercial vehicle safety centre is set to open outside RNZAF Base Ohakea, between Bulls and Sanson, to screen trucks for compliance and risk. The Ohakea Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre (CVSC) will become operational on Wednesday, May 7. From this date, heavy vehicles will be screened by the static cameras and in-road weigh-in-motion (WIM) scales on State Highway 1 and 3 between Bulls and Sanson.

    A new $8 plus GST fee for trucks entering Port of Tauranga’s Mount Maunganui wharves will come into effect from July 1, despite industry concern about its justification and effectiveness. The charge was outlined in an April 30 customer notice signed by commercial general manager Blair Hamill. It applies to all trucks entering controlled gates at Rata Street, Hull Road, Maui Street, Waimarie Street and Tasman Quay and will be invoiced monthly to the registered owner of each vehicle.

    The first FAW JH6 550HP truck in New Zealand has been officially handed over to its new owners, Kam Transport, at a ceremony held at TRT’s Hamilton service facility. The Chinese manufactured truck is powered by a 13-litre, six-cylinder, common rail, turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine, delivering 550 horsepower for heavy-duty transport applications.

The ACC Fleet Saver programme, which rewards trucking businesses with lower levies for adopting strong safety practices, will close to new applicants from July 1, with a full phase-out by June 2029.
