Balkan Holidays has promoted Lynsey Jones to a new position of Head of Sales and Brand, overseeing both sales and marketing for trade and direct channels. The operator is also taking on two Regional Sales Managers in December, while its existing RSM, Natasha Smith, will step into a new role focusing on homeworkers. At the same time, Emiliyan Stoyanov will join the team from reservations as Sales & Marketing Associate, collaborating with Lynsey.

Two powerful earthquakes have damaged buildings, roads and power lines in Cuba, which is still struggling to recover from two hurricanes in recent weeks. Both tremors, the second of which was the strongest, were felt in several cities in the east of the country, including Santiago de Cuba, Holguin and Guantanamo, and as far away as Florida and in Ocho Rios in Jamaica. The Foreign Office said the second, most-powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8, was followed by a series of aftershocks.

AmaWaterways co-founder Rudi Schreiner confirmed the river cruise operator is looking to add more destinations, possibly from 2027. Speaking at an ‘appreciation lunch’ held in London for key UK partners, Rudi said Ama was ‘looking again at India’, plus he would like to return to Myanmar and Russia, once it is feasible to do so.
Brits continue to flock to Tenerife, despite over-tourism protests

Tenerife is expecting a 77% increase in UK tourists in the first nine months of 2025. The projected increase for 2025 follows a near 10% rise last year to over 2.5m UK visitors. Additional airlift, including new flights from Bournemouth with Jet2 and from Cardiff with Ryanair, has provided 13% more seats this winter, and bookings to Tenerife for the last quarter of this year alone are up 41% over the same period of 2023.
Riviera launches travel agent awards scheme

Riviera Travel will host its first agent awards ceremony in 2025 to recognise the success of its retail, homeworkers and online travel agent partners. Categories will include Best Newcomer, Best Cruise Agent, Best Homeworker, Best Long-Haul and Best European Tour Trade Partner. Winners will be chosen by the senior Riviera trade team, based on performances and results in 2024. An afternoon awards ceremony will take place at The Lookout, 8 Bishopsgate, London, on 10 April.

Bill Munro’s funeral details announced

The funeral of Barrhead founder Bill Munro will take place later this month. Bill, who launched the Scottish travel agency in 1975, died last month, at the age of 80. His funeral will be held at 11am on Thursday 28 November at Linn Crematorium in Glasgow and afterwards at a venue to be confirmed, said his wife, Susan Harris. Following Bill’s death, on 26 October, his daughter, former Barrhead Chief Operating Officer Sharon Munro, thanked the travel industry for its support.
Virgin Atlantic to resume flights to Mexico

Virgin Atlantic is returning to Mexico with three weekly flights from London Heathrow to Cancun for winter 2025. Starting on 19 October, the new flights will be the only direct service between Heathrow and Cancun. Virgin will offer connections to the other cities in central and South America, such as Mexico City, Santiago, Buenos Aries and Lima, with SkyTeam partner Aeromexico and codeshare partner LATAM.
BA parent IAG reports increase in summer profit

British Airways parent IAG has reported an operating profit of £1.7 billion for the third-quarter of the year, up more than 15% from a year ago. It said revenues over the summer, for the three months to the end of September, rose almost 8% to £7.7bn. Chief Executive Luis Gallego said the improvement was due to the ‘effectiveness of our strategy and group-wide transformation’. “Demand remains strong across our airlines and we expect a good final quarter of 2024 financially,” he added.
