The 43rd governor of Illinois will be the speaker at Knox College’s commencement in June. Gov. JB Pritzker will also receive an honorary degree from Knox, the college announced on Friday. “It is an honor to welcome Illinois’ Governor, JB Pritzker, as our Commencement speaker this June,” said President C. Andrew McGadney, in an announcement posted on the college’s website.

Quarterly reports filed this week with the Illinois State Board of Elections show a couple of trends in local mayoral elections — more money is flowing into these non-partisan races and more political action committees are getting involved. In Galesburg, former mayor John Pritchard's campaign spent more than $135,000 between Jan. 1 and March 31, which was 20 times more than incumbent Peter Schwartzman's campaign spent during the same time period to win the race.

Brian Quick has been interested in organ donation campaigns since he was a teenager. His father, who was diabetic, needed a kidney transplant. He was on dialysis for a year while continuing to work his job in a factory. “And then, thankfully for us, a kidney was available. And he received a life-saving transplant,” Quick said.

Macomb city council members voted in favor of proceeding with development of an indoor sports complex. The city administration calls the complex a sports tourism project that would bring in people to visit, spend the night, and spend money in Macomb. Council members left open the possibility of changing course if they cannot secure the financing or resources to complete the project. “We’re proceeding with caution,” said Mayor Mike Inman. The council approved the motion on a 5 to 0 vote.

The chair of the Iowa House Higher Education Committee said there is a lack of trust in higher education. Representative Taylor Collins, R-Mediapolis, said he wants to restore confidence in colleges and universities. Collins said that starts with eliminating DEI and what he called the political distractions on campuses. “To me, DEI means division, exclusion, and indoctrination. We are done with identity politics after this last election.
