Pritzker to address Knox College graduates, receive honorary degree

The 43rd governor of Illinois will be the speaker at Knox College’s commencement in June. Gov. JB Pritzker will also receive an honorary degree from Knox, the college announced on Friday. “It is an honor to welcome Illinois’ Governor, JB Pritzker, as our Commencement speaker this June,” said President C. Andrew McGadney, in an announcement posted on the college’s website.

Quarterly reports filed this week with the Illinois State Board of Elections show a couple of trends in local mayoral elections — more money is flowing into these non-partisan races and more political action committees are getting involved. In Galesburg, former mayor John Pritchard's campaign spent more than $135,000 between Jan. 1 and March 31, which was 20 times more than incumbent Peter Schwartzman's campaign spent during the same time period to win the race.
Organ donations: ‘You can be a hero’

Brian Quick has been interested in organ donation campaigns since he was a teenager. His father, who was diabetic, needed a kidney transplant. He was on dialysis for a year while continuing to work his job in a factory. “And then, thankfully for us, a kidney was available. And he received a life-saving transplant,” Quick said.
Macomb council votes to proceed with sports complex

Macomb city council members voted in favor of proceeding with development of an indoor sports complex. The city administration calls the complex a sports tourism project that would bring in people to visit, spend the night, and spend money in Macomb. Council members left open the possibility of changing course if they cannot secure the financing or resources to complete the project. “We’re proceeding with caution,” said Mayor Mike Inman. The council approved the motion on a 5 to 0 vote.
Collins: Too many ‘political distractions’ on campuses

The chair of the Iowa House Higher Education Committee said there is a lack of trust in higher education. Representative Taylor Collins, R-Mediapolis, said he wants to restore confidence in colleges and universities. Collins said that starts with eliminating DEI and what he called the political distractions on campuses. “To me, DEI means division, exclusion, and indoctrination. We are done with identity politics after this last election.
Prayer service to support Haitian, other immigrants in Monmouth

Free health and wellness fair in Henderson County

The Henderson County Health Department is putting together a free health and wellness fair. “We want to share our knowledge and the resources that are available to people,” said Sharon Graham, Public Health Emergency Preparedness Coordinator. “We have more resources available in the county than what people realize and we’re trying to spread that message.”The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, at the Henderson County Health Department, 208 W. “Hands off” rallies across the nation on Saturday protested the policies of the Trump administration. In Macomb, a couple hundred demonstrators made sure local Republicans saw and heard them. The rally took place across the street from the annual Lincoln Day Dinner held by McDonough County Republicans.
60 years for Lovato - ‘A methodical, cold-blooded murder’

Circuit Court Judge Heidi Benson on Friday morning sentenced Dylan Lovato to 60 years in prison for the March 9, 2022 shooting death of Ivan Almanza in Macomb. Benson called the shooting a “methodical, cold-blooded murder” and “an attempt to exert power and control over a former domestic partner.”Lovato, now 26, drove four hours to Macomb in the middle of the night, let himself into the apartment of his ex-girlfriend, Emily Check, and shot Almanza three times in the head while Almanza was asleep.
Bird sanctuary opens to the public in Macomb

There’s a new space in Macomb for those who love the outdoors. The Wigwam Hollow Bird Sanctuary, 1900 Wigwam Hollow Rd., includes 200 acres of oak and hickory forests along with a five-acre restored prairie in the middle. The bird sanctuary is owned by Prairie Land Conservancy. Executive Director Victoria Livingston encourages people to visit it. “Not every community is lucky enough to have natural green space that is open to the public for hiking.
