    The city of Galesburg will take another stab at discouraging murders of crows from roosting downtown. Local officials have tried a number of methods over the past couple decades to evict the crows. There have been squawk boxes, crow effigies — and even the firing of special shotgun rounds to scare them off. Now the city will hire a kettle of falcons. Seven of them to be exact, that will be deployed downtown for a month in November or December when the crows come home to Galesburg to roost.

    A Knox County woman charged with murdering the former Maquon police chief has pleaded guilty to charges of forgery and possessing a firearm without a valid FOID card. Marcy L. Oglesby, 53, still faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a toxic substance, and concealment of a homicide in the death of Richard Young.

    Galesburg police arrested Grayling Churn, 67, on Thursday night, following the armed robbery of an ice cream shop on the city’s south side. Police responded to the robbery at Flavor Freeze, 552 S. Farnham St., around 9:21 p.m.The suspect departed the scene with a bank bag containing cash. When officers located the suspect’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, the driver did not stop, leading officers to pursue the suspect for several blocks.

    A federal grand jury has returned indictments against two Galesburg women for fraudulently obtaining PPP loans for themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic — and for assisting others in obtaining loans with fraudulent tax documents. The indictments, filed last week in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois in Rock Island, charge Dorothy D. Barber, 53, and Shyniece L. Mixon, 27, with wire fraud.
