GRANT TWP. — A skid-steer loader burned here on April 4, but firefighters protected a pole barn and the rest of its contents from destruction. “We made a heck of a knockdown,” said Jim Seley, chief of the Oliver Township Fire Department based in Elkton in Huron County. “A skid steer was burning and we had to go a roundabout way to get to it, but once we got to it, they put the fire out pretty good, and nothing else burned. It was a great outing for the guys.

Knofski, who lives near Marquette in the Upper Peninsula, traveled to Michigan’s Thumb region to help orchestrate the 20th annual Akron Freedom Fest Charity Bike Run on Sept. 1, 2024. CASS CITY — Members of the Cass City Village Council say they haven’t received a raise since 1985. That 40-year drought, however, could end soon. The 1985 ordinance caps the annual compensation for the village president at $600, and caps the annual compensation for other council members at $400.

Tuscola County Central Dispatch has switched to a new provider of public alerts sent via text, email or phone. The county’s 52,826 residents must register to receive the alerts from the new provider – the OnSolve CodeRed public alerting system. Residents can register on their smartphone by texting the word “TUSCOLA” to 24639. “You text that word to that number, and it will send you a hyperlink back, and then you just create your account,” said Jon Ramirez, Central Dispatch director.

Man Sentenced for Arson

FREMONT TWP. — A man told police that a co-worker threatened to kill him days before the co-worker set fire to the man’s home near Mayville. The arsonist, 21-year-old Jaden J. Ayres of Lapeer, was sentenced to prison for seven to 20 years, with credit for three days served, for second-degree arson. Ayres also was sentenced, on March 25, to seven to 15 years in prison, with credit for three days served, for second-degree home invasion. The sentences will be served concurrently, or at the same time.

CARO — A Tuscola County assistant prosecutor says 48-year-old Brian L. Gotwalt “will likely remain a danger to children so long as he draws breath.”Tuscola County Circuit Judge Amy Grace Gierhart on March 25 sentenced Gotwalt, of Mayville, to 25 years to 50 years in prison for each of two crimes of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The sentences will be served consecutively – one after the other – and Gierhart gave Gotwalt credit for 466 days served.
