Judge mulls if Putman’s in contempt of court

FLUSHING – Four days after William E. “Bill” Putman II told a judge he’s “never been in trouble,” the judge scheduled a hearing when he could find Putman in contempt of court. Genesee County District Judge David J. Goggins on Monday set a hearing for 8:30 a.m. on June 9 regarding the contempt-of-court crime possibly committed by Putman, 64, of the Caro area. If found in contempt by Goggins, the judge could sentence Putman to a maximum sentence of 93 days in jail and a $7,500 fine.
Key Stretch of Chambers Road Closed to Traffic

INDIANFIELDS TWP. — A 3.5-mile section of Chambers Road – north of M-46 and south of M-81 – was closed to traffic as of today. Brent Dankert, county highway engineer for the Tuscola County Road Commission, told The Advertiser that his agency will oversee a $617,000 project to improve the safety of a 1.2-mile stretch of Chambers Roads from M-81 to Washburn Road.

WISNER TWP. — No one lived in the Wisner Township mobile home that burned to the ground Tuesday, April 29 – one of the year’s windiest days. Unionville Fire Chief Shawn Kish said the vacant home’s owner, Loy Linton Jr. of the town of Kawkawlin in Bay County, was aware the structure was lost to fire when Kish spoke with him over the weekend. “It was a second residence; I don’t know if it was his hunting property, or not,” Kish said. “He wasn’t, like, upset.
Cops: Embezzler Stole at Least $100,000

ARBELA TWP. — Police allege an Arbela Township woman embezzled $100,000 or more from a vulnerable adult during a period of more than four years. Karyn K. Killian, 59, is charged with embezzlement of $100,000 or more from the victim, and also is accused of stealing his identity, and using a computer to commit a crime carrying a maximum imprisonment of 20 years to life. The Tuscola County Sheriff’s Office claims the crimes occurred from Jan. 1, 2019 through Feb. 28, 2023, in Arbela Township.
Vassar Plans to Vacate Street, Hearing Set

VASSAR — A public hearing has been scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, June 2 regarding the city of Vassar’s plan to vacate a portion of North Sherman Street. The city plans to vacate a 200-yard-long segment of North Sherman Street from East Huron Avenue north to North Sheridan Street. No homes are located along North Sherman Street in that locale, an area the city plans to use for the construction of a new public safety building. FLUSHING — William E. “Bill” Putman II, accused of shoving a youth-wrestling referee, could avoid jail time and keep a guilty plea off his record. Putman, 64, of Tuscola County’s Ellington Township, pleaded guilty on Thursday, May 1 to being a disorderly person in connection with the March 2 incident at Clio High School. Witnesses allege Putman shoved referee Harold J. Eastman after Putman came onto the wrestling mat after disagreeing with the outcome of a match involving Putman’s grandson.
Vassar School Play Sends Musical Message

VASSAR — Kindergartners and first-graders sought to send a worldly message to the audience during a musical program here April 15. “Teach the World to Sing,” directed by Mandy Shepherd, was presented by pupils from Vassar’s Central Elementary School. Firefighters Seek Owner of Destroyed Dwelling

WISNER TWP. — Fire destroyed a mobile home and a Chevrolet SUV here Tuesday, and firefighters continue trying to determine who lived at the residence. Fire crews were sent to the scene at 5280 King Road, about one-half mile north of Dickerson Road in northwest Tuscola County, about 3:10 p.m. Tuesday. The location is about eight miles northwest of Akron. Property taxes on the parcel are paid by Loy Linton Jr. of Kawkawlin in Bay County, according to Tuscola County records.
Valentine Picked as Wisner Twp. Treasurer

WISNER TWP. — Norine M. Weiler has resigned as Wisner Township treasurer after township residents expressed concerns about her performance. The township board of trustees voted 4-0 – with Weiler absent – to accept Weiler’s letter of resignation at a special meeting April 24. Minutes later, the board appointed Lisa Valentine as treasurer, but only after the board accepted Valentine’s resignation as township trustee. Valentine abstained from voting on accepting her own resignation.
