    GRANT TWP. — A skid-steer loader burned here on April 4, but firefighters protected a pole barn and the rest of its contents from destruction. “We made a heck of a knockdown,” said Jim Seley, chief of the Oliver Township Fire Department based in Elkton in Huron County. “A skid steer was burning and we had to go a roundabout way to get to it, but once we got to it, they put the fire out pretty good, and nothing else burned. It was a great outing for the guys.

    AKRON — Carl Knofski made the 375-mile drive to keep the ride alive. And veterans have been thanking him for his service. Knofski, who lives near Marquette in the Upper Peninsula, traveled to Michigan’s Thumb region to help orchestrate the 20th annual Akron Freedom Fest Charity Bike Run on Sept. 1, 2024. Knofski, owner of Michigan Bike Life – which sells merchandise and apparel at michiganbikelife.com – teamed with local resident Alvin Vollmar to stage the bike run.

The public, however, can see the place for themselves – and mingle with owners and employees of Vassar-area businesses – at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 16.     CASS CITY — Members of the Cass City Village Council say they haven’t received a raise since 1985. That 40-year drought, however, could end soon. The 1985 ordinance caps the annual compensation for the village president at $600, and caps the annual compensation for other council members at $400.
