In today’s world, everything is frozen, thaw and sell. I think what sets us apart are our bakery, produce, deli, and meat.”Haines has owned Central Shop Rite, located at 500 Goodrich St. in Vassar, since 1994. He began working there in 1978.

MAYVILLE — Sharing is caring. Cliché? Maybe, but it’s how the Mayville Area Share Shop conducts business. Mayville Area Share Shop is a nonprofit organization that accepts donations and serves as a place for those in need to receive support. “We sort items that are donated and hang them out,” one of its managers, Janet Ellicott, said. “The prices are kept low so that anybody can afford them. They may need help but don’t really want to ask for it. We’re here for the community.

CARO — He was someone who didn’t let life’s hardships stop him. Douglas “Doug” Patrick DuRussel passed away on Jan. 23 in Flint at age 63. Born in Saginaw, DuRussel served on the Tuscola County Board of Commissioners and as a board member with Michigan Sports Unlimited. He was a District 4 commissioner in the county from 2019-2022. That district encompasses Arbela, Millington, Tuscola and Watertown townships.

The Tuscola Community Connections app was launched in the fall and is designed to assist people in Tuscola County connect with various services in the area. “It brings together information about local services such as basic needs, healthcare, mental health, addiction and recovery resources, education, emergency assistance, children and family services along with community events all in one place,” a description of the app on the Google Play Store states.

CARO — It’s a phrase that stuck with Mark Haney throughout his career - “everybody has a story to tell. Most people have more than one story to tell. It’s your job to go out and get the one story, but keep the other stories in your back pocket and maybe you go back to them later.”Haney retired from The Advertiser at the end of 2024, wrapping up a 51-year career in news media. “The first word that comes to my mind is credibility when I think of Mark,” Advertiser Publisher Tim Murphy said.
