Tuscola County Veterans Affairs is hosting an open house on May 30. At the celebratory event, folks can check out the department’s new office and learn more about the services it offers. The open house takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1309 Cleaver Road Suite A in Caro.

    CARO — It doesn’t come around often, which makes an upcoming tribute to the Vietnam War that more meaningful. A press release from Caro American Legion Post 7 indicates that The Moving Wall will be set up at Darbee Farm Park in Caro on June 27, June 28, and June 29. The last time it was displayed in Caro was in 2004. The park is located at 1365 E. Caro Road.

    CARO — It’s been a mission, not a job for Mark Zmierski. After nearly a decade in his role as Tuscola County Veterans Affairs director, Zmierski is retiring. His last day is May 30. “I’ve been blessed to be able to do this,” Zmierski said.

    VASSAR — The ability to focus on quality is one aspect of Central Shop Rite that James Haines is proud of. “We have the ability to break eggs and mix flour every night,” he said. “It’s a quality thing. In today’s world, everything is frozen, thaw and sell. I think what sets us apart are our bakery, produce, deli, and meat.”Haines has owned Central Shop Rite, located at 500 Goodrich St. in Vassar, since 1994. He began working there in 1978.

    MAYVILLE  —   Sharing is caring. Cliché? Maybe, but it’s how the Mayville Area Share Shop conducts business. Mayville Area Share Shop is a nonprofit organization that accepts donations and serves as a place for those in need to receive support. “We sort items that are donated and hang them out,” one of its managers, Janet Ellicott, said. “The prices are kept low so that anybody can afford them. They may need help but don’t really want to ask for it. We’re here for the community.
