In biology, the binding of cellular proteins to molecules called ligands produces a myriad of functions essential for life, including cell signaling and enzymatic action. In biotechnology and medicine, the ability of researchers to alter proteins to refine control over binding affinity and specificity can create tailored therapeutics with reduced side effects, highly sensitive diagnostic tools, efficient biocatalysis, targeted drug delivery systems and sustainable bioremediation solutions.

The need for blood supplies is constant across the United States. The University of Alabama at Birmingham is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive next week. The blood drive will be held Jan. 28-31 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day in the North Pavilion Atrium. Donors will receive a $15 e-gift card and a Red Cross T-shirt while supplies last. UAB is one of the largest users nationally of blood supplied by the Red Cross. Donors can give blood up to six times a year, every eight weeks.

The University of Alabama Birmingham Medicine is now accepting adult patients of all ages for non-emergency care at UAB Medical West. The Specialty Clinics of UAB Hospital at UAB Medical West are staffed by experienced and compassionate UAB Medicine doctors, nurses and other professionals. These new clinics are located on the sixth floor of the UAB Medical West medical office building, 5000 Medical West Way, Bessemer, AL 35022.

Topgun is UAB’s first facility dog. He joined the SRC team in May and has already become a favorite among UAB Medicine patients and employees. “Our patients and employees love to see Topgun,” said Emily Rider, a recreational therapist at UAB and facility dog handler.

Researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine have published a study in JACC: Heart Failure that sheds light on how managing cardiovascular risk factors can influence health outcomes in carriers of the transthyretin V142I variant. Some 3 percent to 4 percent of Black individuals in the United States have the transthyretin V142I genetic variant, which significantly increases an individual’s risk of heart failure.
