Westword is a free alternative weekly newspaper located in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 1977, Westword started as an independent publication. In 1983, it came under the ownership of New Times Media. In 2005, New Times expanded by acquiring Village Voice Media and rebranding itself as Village Voice Media. Then, in September 2012, executives Scott Tobias, Christine Brennan, and Jeff Mars purchased Village Voice Media's publications and online assets from the original founders, leading to the creation of Voice Media Group.
