    On Tuesday, Governor JB Pritzker signed a bill aimed at providing free identification cards to individuals exiting correctional facilities in Illinois. While the state currently offers ID cards to those leaving the Department of Corrections or the Department of Juvenile Justice, this new law extends the program to include all county jails and federal prisons across Illinois. The law became effective immediately upon Pritzker’s signature.

    A fire Saturday morning has destroyed a Mt. Vernon, IL business, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office was called in to investigate the cause. Reports indicated Jefferson County fire officials were called to the Phoenix Tops company on the east side of Mt. Vernon, and upon arrival in the 400 block of Meadowbrook, flames were coming through the garage door. A track hoe was brought in to remove the roof and most of the walls of the business still standing to help fight the fire.
