The agenda item coming in under new business stated “Update: Mingo County Schools Special Circumstance Review Report which was handled by Alexandra Criner - At the March 2025 meeting, the WVBE received an update of initial findings from the Special Circumstance Review of Mingo County Schools.

WILLIAMSON — This week marked Happy National Teacher Appreciation Week. Celebrated the first full school week of May. Mingo Central and Mingo County School Board held weekly events and spoke about the staff in Mingo County. Mingo County Board of Education went to social media to talk about the teachers of Mingo County. “Happy National Teacher Appreciation Week to all of our wonderful staff across Mingo County,” the social media post said.

WILLIAMSON — The Mingo County Commission held their first meeting for the month of May las Tuesday with the Town of Delbarton being a topic of discussion about their annual Homecoming Festival. Albert Totten represented the festival as they requested financial assistance for the festival. Totten has been representing since 1996 and thanked the county commission for the use of the county wide entertainment stage that Delbarton has used in previous events.

Tennessee man charged with attempted murder

GILBERT – A Johnson City, TN man was arrested on May 11 after an altercation at Twin Hallow Camp Ground. Larry Michael McClanahan, 55, was arrested for several charges of attempted murder after firing a gun into a cabin. The criminal complaint states on May 11 at midnight deputies with the Mingo County Sheriff's Department responded to a 911 call located at Twin Hollow Camp Ground in Gilbert, WV. MECCA informed officers that gunshots were being fired.
Emergency Commission meeting held about flood debris contract

WILLIAMSON – An emergency meeting was held Thursday at the Mingo County Commission about a flood debris contract. Only one item was on the agenda with two sub-topics - 1. Flood Recovery Debris Monitoring: a. rescind Thompson Consulting Bid Award b. DebrisTech Bid Award and Notice to Proceed. The need for the emergency meeting came from a previous meeting where Thompson Consulting was awarded the contract about the flood debris from the February flooding that impacted Mingo County.
Williamson Council talks rate increases, camping ordinance

WILLIAMSON – Councilman Ralphie Hall proposed looking at raising water, sewer and garbage rates at Thursday’s Williamson City Council meeting. Hall stated that it had been over 10 years since a rate increase and stated before going into the details that he knows residents are not going to like a potential rate increase. “This is really not going to be popular, but as everybody knows, the city is in dire need,” Hall said.

Education Alliance of West Virginia's MedEx program signs second class of students

HUNTINGTON — Juniors and seniors at Cabell Midland High School and Wayne High School have an opportunity to experience working in the health care field before graduation: the Med Explorers program or MedEx through the Education Alliance of West Virginia. The second class of students was officially signed to the two-year program Friday. They must apply and interview to be considered. Juniors do a job shadow and seniors go into a paid internship.
