MILWAUKEE — Regardless of how Payton Haugen felt about finishing runner-up to Hartland's Jessica Guiser each of the last two years at the WPGA Junior Girls Championship, the Brookfield golfer did gain something valuable in the process — a great appreciation for Guiser and how she made winning look effortless. Defending champion Adam Garski was waiting for his elimination to become official. Three-time Wisconsin State Player of the Year Jack Schultz had just come up short in a playoff.

BEAVER DAM — Lola Appleby had just been offered a relevant sample of Wisconsin junior golf history from none other than former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker, who was impressed that the 13-year-old opponent of his daughter, Izzi, was holding her own well into the back nine Tuesday at Old Hickory Golf Club during the quarterfinals of the Wisconsin State Women's Match Play Championship.
