'It's a dream come true': At long last, Rory McIlroy caps a grand career with a Masters championship

AUGUSTA, Ga. — You watched Rory McIlroy after his three-foot birdie putt found the middle of the cup on the 18th green Sunday, with daylight fading at Augusta National Golf Club and the weight of the world sliding off his shoulders to make way for a green jacket. You watched him, graying at the temples, no longer the Irish boy wonder, falling to his knees and sobbing. You watched him leaving the 18th green, the patrons’ cheers of “Rory! Rory! Rory!” ringing in his ears.

Abby Henriksen of DeForest got Jordan Spieth’s autograph and bought a Masters sweatshirt, which she has worn “every day” since winning the Girls 14-15 Division at the DC&P National Finals in Augusta, Ga.On Saturday, six days after finishing T-7 in the Boys 14-15 Division, Jared Romano, a home-schooled freshman on the Clinton High School boys golf team, competed in a 17-team junior varsity meet at Oak Ridge Golf Course in Milton. AUGUSTA, Ga. — Yes, Justin Rose’s first-round 65 in the 89th Masters Tournament was nearly as brilliant as the sun that bathed the Augusta National Golf Club on Thursday. Rose is a major champion, having won the 2013 U.S. Open. He has another 21 top-10 finishes in major championships, plus 25 victories around the world. He’s the consummate professional, with a record over the last 20 years surpassed by only a few — a “borderline Hall of Fame player,” as Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee called him.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Noah Kent was 12 years old when he attended the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills with his stepfather, Dana Fry, who was a co-designer of the course in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine. There’s a photo of Kent, a green Erin Hills cap on his head, posing with Rory McIlroy. After the photo was snapped, Kent looked up at McIlroy and said, “You’re not that big. How do you hit it so far?” McIlroy laughed and told Kent that anyone who dreamt big and worked hard could make it in golf.

Asked what he thought about Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson picking him to win the @TheMasters this week, @McIlroyRory smiled and said, "They're getting old."

Lovely forecast for the balance of the Masters. Sunny and 70 today, partly cloudy and 69 Saturday and mostly sunny and 72 Sunday. Slight chance of showers Saturday. Very light breeze on the weekend.

The bloom is on Justin Rose and his opening-round 65 at the Masters, but all eyes are on Scottie Scheffler's run at history https://t.co/sRC9dzfHMj via @wisdotgolf
