MILWAUKEE — Regardless of how Payton Haugen felt about finishing runner-up to Hartland's Jessica Guiser each of the last two years at the WPGA Junior Girls Championship, the Brookfield golfer did gain something valuable in the process — a great appreciation for Guiser and how she made winning look effortless. With Guiser having aged out of junior golf and taken her considerable talent to the University of Florida, it was Haugen's turn to make winning seem easy.

MILWAUKEE — Kade Wieland didn't arrive where he did Thursday without a few meaningful stops along the way, and his journey to the winner's circle at Brown Deer Park Golf Course took the Milton golfer past one of them this week. Noyes Park GC sits about four miles due west of the 18th green at Brown Deer Park GC and it was one of Wieland's first stops 10 years ago when, at age 6, he made the rounds for the first time on the Milwaukee County Par-3 Tour.

Defending champion Adam Garski was waiting for his elimination to become official. Three-time Wisconsin State Player of the Year Jack Schultz had just come up short in a playoff.

BEAVER DAM — Lola Appleby had just been offered a relevant sample of Wisconsin junior golf history from none other than former U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker, who was impressed that the 13-year-old opponent of his daughter, Izzi, was holding her own well into the back nine Tuesday at Old Hickory Golf Club during the quarterfinals of the Wisconsin State Women's Match Play Championship.
