The Kalamazoo Philharmonia’s concert at 7:30 pm on Saturday, Mar 31 honors a unique anniversary, suggested to music director Andrew Koehler by predecessoro Barry Ross. “Copland at K” remembers Aaron Copland’s visit to Kalamazoo College to receive an honorary degree 60 years ago. Hosted at the Light Fine Arts Building, the concert promises a blend of Copland’s music and contemporary American voices, including the world premiere of a new bassoon concertino by Michigan composer Philip Rugel.

Michigan Notable Author and Poet Brittany Rogers was riddled with doubts about her first poetry manuscript. During edits, she dropped all the poems on the pages until she had only four left. Then she deleted those, too. When a professor took a look at the finally finished manuscript, he told Rogers: “Print and submit. NOW.” Rogers is a poet, visual artist, essayist, high school teacher, and lifelong Detroiter. Her new collection is titled, Good Dress (Tin House Press, 2025).

Cox, who is a property manager at a real estate company in Globe, has tenants who rely on the safety-net program. And at the domestic violence shelter where she volunteers as president of the board, Cox said, staff always look to enroll women and their children if possible. But Cox, who is 65, has mixed feelings about Medicaid.
