    The City of Kalamazoo wants to cut its greenhouse gas emissions. On Monday it took a major step toward that goal. Commissioners approved a 20-year contract with Consumers Energy that will spur investment in new solar and wind projects. Those projects will generate enough electricity to offset the city’s yearly energy use, as though the city were using 100 percent renewable energy to power its buildings and equipment.

    Governor Gretchen Whitmer has appealed a denial of federal disaster aidfor four Southwest Michigan counties affected by the storms of May 7. FEMA turned down Whitmer’s initial request in July. In a statement, Whitmer said she wants the agency to reconsider its decision not to issue a Major Disaster Declaration for Kalamazoo, Cass, Branch and St. Joseph Counties.

    The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says it arrested a suspect Thursday morning in a series of recent fires. According to KDPS, the man faces "multiple felony arson charges.""This arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into these incidents," the Department wrote on Facebook. In the same post, Fire Marshal Scott Brooks called the arrest “a major step forward.”KDPS did not say which fires the suspect allegedly played a role in.

    A man says he was fired from his political canvassing job for wearing a gun as he went door-to-door in Kalamazoo last week. The man left door hangers promoting Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. Fine print on the hangers notes that they were paid for by Americans for Prosperity Action, a political fundraising group that supports Rogers. AFP Action has not responded to multiple requests for comment, and has not confirmed that the man was fired.
