WNMU-FM

WNMU-FM is a radio station located in Marquette, Michigan, broadcasting on FM 90.1. Owned by Northern Michigan University, it is part of the National Public Radio network and features a rich mix of classical and jazz music, along with various local shows. The station is run by a team of full-time professionals and students. WNMU-FM caters to listeners in the Upper Peninsula and northeastern Wisconsin. It first went on air in 1963, originally under the call sign WNMR, and became a member of NPR in 1971, officially changing its name to WNMU-FM in 1975. While WNMU-FM is licensed for HD Radio broadcasting, it paused HD transmission in spring 2011 due to budgetary issues. The station had plans to introduce additional HD-2 and HD-3 channels, one dedicated entirely to classical music and the other focused on public radio news and information. It was the only radio station in the Upper Peninsula authorized for HD broadcasts.

    GRAND RAPIDS, MI— A federal jury has convicted a L’Anse man of killing a toddler. On February 19, 2024, the 19-month-old became unresponsive while in the sole custody of Eugene Rantanen, 37, on the Keweenaw Bay Indian Reservation. The child died on February 24. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Andrew Birge says based on the medical examiner’s testimony, the toddler had suffered blunt force trauma to the head. That caused significant injuries to the brain.

    PEMBINE, WI— A Marinette County accident claimed the life of a Pembine man on Friday. It happened at 2:25 p.m. on Cemetery Road near Short Cut Road. A vehicle driven by Jacob Bruneau, 44, was eastbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the road and struck a tree. Bruneau was taken by Guardian Life Flight to the hospital, but he later died of his injuries.

    PORTERFIELD, WI— An 18-year-old girl has died in a two-vehicle crash in Marinette County. Sheriff Randy Miller says deputies were dispatched Wednesday at 5:52 p.m. to State Highway 180 south of Nettleton Road in the town of Porterfield. Investigation indicates Jacob Lebick, 39, of Marinette was southbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. His vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a vehicle driven by Alise LaPierre, 18, of Marinette. LaPierre sustained fatal injuries.
