Crews to conduct fire training at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport

KI SAWYER, MI— Firefighters are conducting live fire training exercises at Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport Monday and Tuesday. The “Hot Drill” training by the Airport Rescue Firefighters is an annual requirement set by the FAA to ensure readiness and safety in aviation emergencies. Using specialized propane-fueled equipment, the training will simulate aircraft and large jet fuel fires.
Man convicted of killing child on KBIC reservation

GRAND RAPIDS, MI— A federal jury has convicted a L’Anse man of killing a toddler. On February 19, 2024, the 19-month-old became unresponsive while in the sole custody of Eugene Rantanen, 37, on the Keweenaw Bay Indian Reservation. The child died on February 24. Acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Andrew Birge says based on the medical examiner’s testimony, the toddler had suffered blunt force trauma to the head. That caused significant injuries to the brain.
Pembine man killed in single-vehicle crash

PEMBINE, WI— A Marinette County accident claimed the life of a Pembine man on Friday. It happened at 2:25 p.m. on Cemetery Road near Short Cut Road. A vehicle driven by Jacob Bruneau, 44, was eastbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the road and struck a tree. Bruneau was taken by Guardian Life Flight to the hospital, but he later died of his injuries.

Wisconsin teen killed in Marinette County crash

PORTERFIELD, WI— An 18-year-old girl has died in a two-vehicle crash in Marinette County. Sheriff Randy Miller says deputies were dispatched Wednesday at 5:52 p.m. to State Highway 180 south of Nettleton Road in the town of Porterfield. Investigation indicates Jacob Lebick, 39, of Marinette was southbound when he failed to negotiate a curve. His vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a vehicle driven by Alise LaPierre, 18, of Marinette. LaPierre sustained fatal injuries.
Aspirus Keweenaw nurses to rally for safe staffing levels

LAURIUM, MI— Nurses at Aspirus Keweenaw will hold a rally on Tuesday to ask for safe staffing levels, amid a planned expansion of the facility. The Michigan Nurses Association says Aspirus recently made staffing changes at the Laurium hospital despite nurses’ concerns about its impact on their ability to provide safe, quality care. Nurses are calling on Aspirus to rescind the changes and invest in recruiting and retaining enough nurses to serve the community.
Marquette airport adds Chicago flight

KI SAWYER, MI— Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport has expanded its flight offerings to and from Chicago. Officials have announced the addition of a second daily American Airlines flight from and to O’Hare. Departures are now listed as 6:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Arrivals are at 3:49 p.m. and 9:43 p.m.Airport Director Duane DuRay says the new flight complements existing service and provides greater flexibility for passengers. He credits the addition of the flight to increasing passenger numbers.

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— The Lake Superior Community Partnership has received $536,550 in placemaking grants from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. Luce County suspect charged with 2 counts of child abuse

NEWBERRY, MI— A Newberry man has been arraigned on charges he abused a 5-week-old infant. Roy Metcalf, 25, is charged with two counts of first-degree child abuse. In June 2024, Children’s Protective Services was notified by Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids of suspected abuse following the hospital’s assessment of the baby girl. She was initially brought to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, transferred to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, then taken to Grand Rapids.
Bills to keep RICE generators going pass MI House

LANSING, MI— The Michigan House has passed legislation to keep the U.P.’s 13 Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine generators operational through the end of their lifecycle in 2049. Sponsored by Rep. Karl Bohnak, the bills would largely exempt the RICE generators, the energy they produce, and U.P. energy suppliers from new “clean energy” mandates through 2049, when the generators are scheduled to be taken offline.
