Gas prices down 15 cents from a week ago

DEARBORN, MI— Gas prices in Michigan are down 15 cents from last week. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $3.08 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 8 cents more than this time last month but still 62 cents less than this time last year. Motorists are paying an average of $46 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of about $11 from 2024's highest price last July.

Opening of some state parks, campgrounds downstate may be delayed

LANSING, MI— The Department of Natural Resources continues to clean up damage caused by a massive ice storm in the northern Lower Peninsula. Several state parks, state park campgrounds, state forest campgrounds, boating access sites and state-managed trails were affected. As a result, a number of areas were temporarily closed until safe access could be restored.
UPHS-Bell CEO to retire

ISHPEMING, MI— UPHS-Bell CEO Mitch Leckelt is retiring June 1, after serving more than 11 years in the post. Leckelt joined the hospital as CEO in 2014 after serving as vice president of operations at Marquette General Hospital, now UP Health System-Marquette. Following Leckelt’s departure, Tonya Darner, CEO of UPHS–Marquette, will be promoted to Market CEO of both Marquette and Bell hospitals and Alyson Sundberg will assume a new leadership role as chief operating officer at Bell.

Dr. Jaclyn Johnson is a Teaching Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Tech officials say she is an exceptional educator who has taught thousands of engineers the art and joy of mechanical engineering.
Kingsford Public Safety releases name of man arrested on drug and firearms charges Monday

KINGSFORD, MI— A Kingsford man has been officially charged following a “high-risk” arrest this week. The Kingsford Public Safety Department and Critical Incident Response Team took Jason Porath, 47, into custody on Monday. It was the culmination of an investigation into narcotics and firearms in the area. Porath is charged with two counts of delivery/manufacture of meth, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and maintaining a drug house.
Prescribed fires planned for Hiawatha, Ottawa National Forests

GLADSTONE, MI— The USDA Forest Service Upper Peninsula Fire and Aviation Management Unit is preparing for prescribed fires in the Hiawatha and Ottawa National Forests. The operations include 7,042 acres in the East Zone and 3,248 acres in the West Zone of the Hiawatha National Forest, and 587 acres in the Ottawa National Forest. Officials say the fires remove hazardous vegetation to mitigate wildfires and prevent loss of property.
Suspect arrested in 'high-risk' operation in Kingsford

Officers say the "high-risk" operation included the Critical Incident Response Team, due to the dangerous nature of the situation. They say the coordinated effort among law enforcement ensured a safe and effective operation, with no injuries to civilians or police reported.
New phone scam hitting Chippewa County

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI— The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office has been dealing with yet another type of phone scam. The department has received reports that someone is calling residents and telling them they missed federal jury duty. The caller says there’s a warrant out for the person’s arrest. The victim is told they must pay a cash bond, either through their debit card or a gift card from such stores as Walmart or Meijer. Once the victim gives the code off the gift cards, the money has been spent.
UP Poet Laureate applications to be accepted starting April 14

MARQUETTE, MI— The official application window for U.P. Poet Laureate will open on Monday. The poet who is chosen will promote poetry and the spoken word. He or she will also encourage appreciation of the art form through public readings, workshops, virtual events, and digital platforms. They will serve a two-year term, which may be renewed one time. A review panel of librarians, poets, and academics from across the U.P. has been established to evaluate applications.
