    The Florida Board of Governors voted to close three UCF campuses. The Board that oversees the state’s university systems discussed two motions that would close or reclassify the campus. Board member Timothy Cerio presented the motion. “I'd like to entertain a motion to approve the request from the University of Central Florida to close the UCF Leesburg campus Palm Bay campus and South Orlando campus,” Cerio said.

    Book bans and restrictions in U.S. public schools rose 33% in the 2022-23 school year, according to a new report from the free speech advocacy group PEN America. And for the first time, Florida led the nation when it comes to limiting access to books in public school libraries. Over 40% of all book bans nationwide occurred in Florida school districts. The 1,406 cases recorded more than doubled the 625 posted by the previous year's leader, Texas.

    Tonda Tyson, 66, sits in the lobby of the courthouse in downtown Tampa. “Recently, this place has been familiar to me,” she said. In May, she found an eviction notice in her mailbox. She lived with her husband, Cliff, in an apartment subsidized by the Tampa Housing Authority. He typically handled the finances, so she was surprised to learn they were three months behind on rent. Then, on Memorial Day, he suffered a stroke.

    The U.S. Small Business Administration is trying to help companies affected by Hurricane Idalia by opening a Business Recovery Center in Hillsborough County. The site opened Tuesday at the Entrepreneur Collaborative Center at 2101 E. Palm Ave. in Tampa. According to an SBA press release, businesses that suffered damages in the storm should not wait to settle with their insurance company before applying for a disaster loan.

    The U.S. News and World Report rankings of the best colleges is out, and Florida's public universities saw some movement. The University of South Florida fell three spots to 45th in public universities, but climbed eight spots to 89th overall among national universities, both public and private. The overall ranking is the highest in USF’s history, according to a press release from President Rhea Law.
