Today is International Human Rights Day, and with the theme of “The Rights Path” for World AIDS Day 2024, it is imperative that we examine the devastating intersection of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and HIV in South Africa. This crisis continues to disproportionately affect women and girls, especially adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), who bear the brunt of the HIV epidemic. However, the intersection of these two public health crises is not merely a matter of statistics.

As the festive season commences, many working-class individuals eagerly anticipate their salary bonuses and early paydays, a tradition that enables them to prepare for holiday celebrations with their loved ones. Ironically, it is often the same working-class people who employ domestic workers yet deny them the same courtesy, neglecting to provide end-of-year bonuses, early paydays, and even annual leaves.

Former Orlando Pirates striker, Benni McCarthy, is still hoping that Senzo Meyiwa and his family will get justice. It’s been over 10 years since Meyiwa was gunned down in Vosloorus, in Ekurhuleni. He was visiting his girlfriend and mother of his child, singer Kelly Khumalo, when he was shot and killed on October 26, 2014. Five men are currently on trial for the killing. McCarthy says he hopes that justice will prevail soon.

Gauteng Premier and provincial ANC chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi, has hit back at the Democratic Alliance (DA), accusing it of running a relentless and desperate campaign to unseat him, destabilise and choke the province. “My message to the DA is try harder masters, the slaves have woken up and smelled the coffee,” adds the Premier.
