Mead Johnson is Zeeland’s third biggest taxpayer, with nearly 500 employees. The nutrition company has had a large impact on the city — but their potential growth could come at a major cost in the future. The plan proposes levelling several homes on the north side of East Main Street, along with rezoning land from residential to industrial.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was killed in a shooting along 28th Street in Grand Rapids Saturday, leading to a large police scene at a nearby hotel. The shooting happened around 8:30 p.m. on 28th near Jefferson Avenue, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department. Chief Eric Winstrom said the initial call to police was about a possible overdose. “Officers arrived, thought they were going to give first aid to an individual with an overdose,” Winstrom said.

BIG RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 77-year-old man was airlifted to the hospital after a car crash near Big Rapids Saturday afternoon, deputies say. It happened in front of the Meijer on Perry Avenue near US-131 around 1 p.m. The Mecosta County Sheriff’s Department says the 77-year-old man pulled out of the road to Meijer and into the path of a westbound car, causing the crash.

GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — Bystanders pulled a child from a car that was rear-ended and then trapped under two pickup trucks, police say. It happened at the intersection of 28th Street and Ottawa Avenue in Grandville around 4:55 p.m. Friday. The Grandville Police Department said in a release that the initial report officers got was of two trucks on top of each other and an injured child. Police say a westbound pickup truck failed to stop for traffic lined up at a red light and rear-ended a sedan.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A local esports company is holding camps in Grand Rapids this summer to help support the rapid growth of the sport. Jump Ahead Play Fuel summer camp will be held every Friday and Saturday from June 20 to Aug. 1 at Burton Middle School. The camp is free to all kids 10 and up in Kent County. “I’m very excited for the culture of esports that we’re building,” said Dee Jones, the chief energy officer at Jump Ahead L3C, the company hosting the camp.
