When was the last time you saw a newsstand? On May 2, the Media 2070 Initiative, a national social justice project from the media advocacy group Free Press, brings traveling immersive multimedia art exhibition Black Future Newsstand to Los Angeles. Previously, Media 2070 has presented pop-up newsstands in Harlem, Austin and Chicago. The event showcases a future where Black communities are being fully represented and valued in the media.

For esthetician Wei-Lin Chong-Cuatt, her hands are full. While Chong-Cuatt breastfed her newborn on a recent February day in her family’s San Gabriel Valley Airbnb while her two eldest eldest sons played with toy blocks and her other son ate lunch in his high chair. It’s a change of scenery for Chong-Cuatt, her husband and their four boys who are age 5 and younger in an area that was once reserved for backyard space at their Altadena home.
