With the deadline for presenting Stockton’s nearly $1 billion budget to the City Council and the public less than a week away, officials are working to fill five top positions in the city department that’s responsible for delivering the plan on time. It’s unlikely they can fill the positions, housed in the Administrative Services Department, by the May 15 deadline. The city has even hired contractors to cover some of the work.

The California Department of Justice and local agencies are investigating after Manteca police officers shot and killed a 69-year-old man in a confrontation at an In-N-Out, police said this week. The incident started around 5 p.m. Wednesday, when the Manteca Police Department received a call about a disturbance in the drive-through line at In-N-Out near East Yosemite Avenue and Highway 99 in Manteca, officials said.

Photos of a Lodi police sergeant were wrongly included in widespread social media posts about an alleged missing officer, the Lodi Police Department stated Tuesday. On its official Facebook page, the department debunked a post that claimed “a female police officer, Carolyn Lynch (27), has gone missing” and that she “may be in extreme danger.”The post, titled “Female Police Officer Missing in Semmes,” had been shared 64 times and had 112 interactions, according to the images.

A man died in Manteca after being struck by a vehicle while riding scooters with family, the Manteca Police Department stated Monday. At about 8:20 p.m. on Friday, the 57-year-old man was riding an electric scooter southbound on the east side of North Airport Way, according to a department press release. As he was trying to cross over to the west side of Airport Way, he was struck by a vehicle, department officials said.

On Tuesday, for the second year in a row, elected officials handed a Stockton nonprofit $150,000 to support its work. The City Council voted 7-0 Tuesday night to award Gospel Center Rescue Mission — a Christian nonprofit focused on homelessness and addiction help — $150,000 from discretionary money left over from last financial year. “I think they’re going to do a lot of great things,” District 5 councilmember Brando Villapudua said before the vote.
