I still remember standing at mid-field as USF Football celebrated its Boca Raton Bowl win over Syracuse. Picture this scene: The crowd rushes to the field to surround the team and catch a glimpse of the Boca Raton Bowl trophy. “Go Bulls” echoed throughout the stadium, and green and gold confetti was everywhere. I soaked it all in and three words entered my mind:“Cherish this moment.”Since May, I have served as sports editor for The Oracle.
USF softball is gaining momentum during season’s final stretch

As the USF softball season draws to a close, it seems the team has found some momentum. The Bulls (30-16, 9-9 AAC) have won six of its last seven games. In the last nine days, they have won their last two conference series and stunned the then-ranked No.9 Florida Gators on Wednesday. USF had yet to clinch a conference series prior to their sweep against Memphis on April 7. Here’s what’s worked for the Bulls during their most recent slate of games.
USF announces stadium groundbreaking date

Time to break out the shovels. A groundbreaking ceremony for the on-campus stadium will be held during Homecoming Week, scheduled for Oct. 14-19, 2024, USF announced Thursday. The university said it would break ground in the fall of this year at a Board of Trustees meeting in December. The stadium is expected to be completed in March 2027, according to university documents. The document also stated an Athletics center, mainly for football and women’s lacrosse, is expected to open in 2026.

Bayron Matos’ journey through sports has been untraditional – and that’s putting it lightly. Not only is Matos an international student, but he’s also a dual-sport athlete. He played college basketball at USF before switching to football. Now – after training with the NFL’s International Player Program (IPP)– he might be ready for the next step, playing professional football. Matos, 23, hails from the Dominican Republic.
USF’s Chris Youngblood enters NCAA transfer portal

USF men’s basketball senior guard Chris Youngblood, the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, entered the transfer portal on Monday. “It has been a great honor to play for the University of South Florida this past year,” Youngblood said on Instagram on Monday.
USF’s Selton Miguel enters transfer portal, NBA draft

USF men’s basketball has been surviving the offseason without many significant losses. On Friday afternoon, that changed. Senior guard Selton Miguel announced he will be entering the 2024 NBA Draft, and will also enter the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, according to his Instagram. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to play at South Florida for the past two years and the family I created while being here,” he said on Instagram.
USF football’s Van Dyke brings energy as new cornerbacks coach: ‘Back to the old days’

Cornerbacks coach Demarcus Van Dyke has fond memories of USF before his hiring in January. He played the Bulls twice during his four-year college career with the Miami Hurricanes. Van Dyke recalled that the Bulls were a team “that no one wanted to play.” He also remembers watching the Bulls’ shutout victory over Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl last December, which reminded him of the standard the team set in the late 2000s.
USF’s NFL Draft drought could end this year

It’s been over half a decade since a USF football player had their name called in the NFL Draft. That streak could be broken this year. The last time a player was selected was in 2018. Defensive tackle Deadrin Senat was drafted in the third round, while receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling was picked in the fifth round by the Green Bay Packers.

USF women’s basketball coach Jose Fernandez is back on the recruiting trail following rumors he considered departing. Related: Jose Hernandez to stay with USF after approach from MiamiFormer Temple forward Ines Piper announced her transfer to USF on Monday. Piper, a senior, has one year of eligibility remaining. A native of Paris, France, Piper played three seasons with the Owls from 2021-2024. She played a pivotal role for the Owls last season.

Longtime women’s basketball coach Jose Fernandez confirmed that he would remain with USF after the University of Miami approached him. “The University of South Florida has been my home for the last 24 years and there is no place I would rather be,” Fernandez said in a Wednesday social media statement. It was reported by For the Win and the Tampa Bay Times that Fernandez’s representatives were in talks with the Hurricanes regarding its vacant head coaching position on Tuesday.
