How to Read a Book is the newest work of fiction by Maine author Monica Wood. Monica is the author of When We Were the Kennedys and The One in a Million Boy amongst many others. Prior to this book, I had not read much from Monica Wood, which is surprising considering we both call the beautiful state of Maine home and both love a well-told tale.

I have enjoyed baking for as long as I can remember, and I credit this almost entirely to my mother. She involved me in much of her work in the kitchen while I was growing up, which has led to cozy memories as a child, my first job in a local bakery as a teen, and applicable life skills as an adult.

One of the most important things I look for when selecting toys and books for my daughter is quality. As a toddler, she is still learning what it means to be gentle, which means that her belongings are often thrown, stepped on, chewed, dropped down the stairs… you get the idea. I am looking for products that can stand the test of toddlerhood and time.

Every child has a handful of books that they request over… and over… and over again. These are the books you have to leave on the shelf even when you swap out the others for variety, the books you and your child probably have memorized, the books you will both one day look back on with nostalgia (or perhaps with a discrete roll of your eyes). Here are some of those books in our household from my daughter’s first year of life.

Happy New Year, from my geek family to yours! With January upon us, my New Year’s parenting resolution is already in full swing. (This is the first year that I have had a parenting resolution.) As a Montessori-prepared adult, part of my work over the last few weeks has been creating strategies and putting supports in place to set us up for success.

Our house is a split-level. We have a baby gate at the top of the stairs, which is near our living room and kitchen, and therefore the heart of our home. One of my one-year-old daughter’s favorite activities is opening and closing doors. Can you see where this is going? Today—I kid you not—she spent twenty minutes opening and closing the gate. Therefore, I spent twenty minutes sitting on the top step, watching my daughter opening and closing the gate.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, there were so many changes to prepare for. My husband and I spent hours “baby-proofing,” rearranging our spaces to accommodate her clothes and toys, and working to make a smooth transition to our new lifestyle. However, one thing I failed to consider was how to dress for breastfeeding and pumping, especially on the go. Never having breastfed before, it didn’t cross my mind that my typical clothing choices weren’t up to the task.

This week, I had the privilege of taking my eleven-month-old daughter to our local county fair. It was such a joy to witness her exposure to a vast array of new and unusual sensory information. Sensorial experiences are the root of all learning for young children! Although we have enjoyed reading books together about farm animals and playing with lifelike figurines, nothing compares to seeing, touching, hearing, and even smelling the real thing.
