The Maryland Supreme Court this week granted a new trial to a woman who was convicted of killing her newborn baby, ruling her internet searches about abortion during the early months of her pregnancy were irrelevant and a judge should not have allowed the jury to hear that information. Traffic traveling both directions on Joppa Road in Baltimore County was backed up near Walther Boulevard on Thursday because of a large sinkhole. Baltimore County officials learned of the damaged road around 8:30 a.m., said Ron Snyder, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Works and Transportation. The Baltimore City Department of Public Works was working with an on-site contractor on repairs because a water main break caused the road to collapse, according to a department spokesperson.

The Maryland Department of Agriculture found a second case of bird flu Tuesday on a commercial chicken farm in Queen Anne’s County. This positive case, found through routine sampling, came four days after MDA officials detected bird flu on Friday in a commercial poultry operation in Caroline County. These are the first positive cases at poultry facilities in the state since 2023.

Share Two Macy’s department stores in Bel Air and Woodlawn are set to close by the end of the first quarter of 2025, the company announced Thursday. The two Maryland stores are among 66 locations closing as part of Macy’s Bold New Chapter strategy, which includes closing 150 “underproductive stores over a three-year period,” according to the company. The stores set to close are in Security Square Mall and Harford Mall.
