Eight hours before the Dali container ship knocked down the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the ship’s captain spoke with its chief engineer. The vessel, berthed at the Port of Baltimore on March 25, 2024, had just experienced two blackouts, and the captain wanted the engineer to comprehensively complete an incident report for the ship’s office. “For now, put the data reporting date as the twenty-eighth,” the captain told the engineer. March 28, however, was three days after the incident.

Conversations among the Dali’s two Maryland-based pilots and its foreign crew members portray an unremarkable beginning to the container ship’s departure from Baltimore last year. Gina Martinez eyed a trip last year to Alaska in pursuit of an item on her bucket list: the northern lights. Instead, the sky spectacular visited her. In October, they were visible in Maryland and Martinez took them in from the middle of a cornfield near her home in Smithsburg. A stadium hosting a minor league soccer team could be built in Baltimore by late 2028 and cost roughly $200 million, according to a new study. The crucial question of how such a venue would be funded, however, remains to be answered. The Maryland Stadium Authority contracted design firm Moody Nolan last year to analyze two possible sites for a 7,500-seat stadium, which would serve as the home of a D.C. United-affiliated team competing in the MLS Next Pro league.

With dozens of longshoremen’s jobs in the balance, some of Maryland‘s most influential lawmakers are making urgent pleas to Gov. Wes Moore to keep a state-owned shipping pier open beyond the year’s end. Canton Stevedoring has leased Pier 4 at the North Locust Point Marine Terminal since 2011, supplying essential road salt to Maryland and other states.
