CALIENTE, Nevada (ABC4) — A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit the area of Caliente, Nevada around 1 a.m. Friday morning. It was a light earthquake 25 miles south southwest of Caliente according to reports, but residents were still able to feel it. “I was in the kitchen cooking cookies for our yard sale this weekend, all of a sudden there was a rumbling!” one resident told ABC4.com. The earthquake had a depth of three miles, and it could be felt for almost 60 miles.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The man who has been on death row for nearly 40 years was found competent to be executed in court Friday, despite having dementia. The judge ordered that Ralph Leroy Menzies failed to prove that his vascular dementia prevents him from understanding his punishment or the state’s reasons for it, and because of that, he is competent to be executed. Ralph Leroy Menzies was sentenced to death row in 1988 for killing Maurine Hunsaker, a mother of three.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has filed a federal lawsuit against Utah Attorney General Derek Brown and Utah Insurance Commissioner Jon Pike over a recent law that is intended to allow more pharmacies to have access to drug discount programs. In a lawsuit filed May 23, AstraZeneca alleges that Utah SB 69 is unconstitutional. The law was introduced and passed in the 2025 General Assembly, and it went into effect on May 7.
