A 19-year stream project that began in the nooks and crannies of mountain ravines in West Virginia has transformed the headwaters of the Potomac River into one of the most robust wild brook trout fisheries south of Maine and the Adirondacks. The restoration work, spearheaded by the nonprofit Trout Unlimited, is all the more inspirational as it comes at a time of considerable effort to save brook trout, the only trout native to the East Coast.

Nearly $1 billion in federal funds are heading to Pennsylvania’s agriculture community and researchers to increase the use of farming practices that fight climate change while encouraging consumers to reward the effort by seeking out “climate-smart” products. The grant money comes from the federal Farm Bill and the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, which contains goals to reduce the greenhouse gases causing climate change.

The fight against climate change and huge demands for more electricity, much of it from data center growth to support artificial intelligence, are fueling renewed interest in nuclear power in several Chesapeake Bay drainage states. The rekindled appetite for nuclear power comes after decades of disinterest and opposition to expanding the power source in the country. The possible resurrection in the region is aided by a federal push for more nuclear power to reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
