Hosted by 22 2 None, the ’Fighting the Fight Within’ 5K and two mile tribute walk will be held at the Veterans Serving Veterans Park in Cadillac. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among veterans, averaging 22 taking their own lives every day.

    TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse County Commission will be meeting Wednesday morning (April 16). One of the items up for discussion will be terminate the county’s Next Generation 911 call handling system. Grand Traverse Central Dispatch Deputy Director, Corey LeCureux said, in a recommendation to the county commission, that the current call system, put into place in 2018, is defective and poorly supported and that a replacement is needed.

    TRAVERSE CITY — The City Commission in Traverse City will be discussing the hot-button topic of short-term rentals during a study session on Monday, April 14. City Commissioner Jackie Anderson will be presenting a proposal for the formation of an ad-hoc committee to discuss the regulation of short-term rentals. She cites that more than 100 new licenses for short-term rentals were issued in 2024, brining the total to 539. Anderson said this puts further pressure on the supply of long-term housing.

BirdTRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Area Public School community is mourning the loss of former school board trustee Holly T. Bird. According to TCAPS, Bird died Wednesday, April 2. They say she began her role with the TCAPS Board of Education in January 2023 and served on the curriculum, finance and sustainability committees during her time there.

    A Northern Michigan food pantry, just for veterans and their families, will be giving out Thanksgiving food boxes next Monday. The Cadillac Veterans Serving Veterans Food Pantry has been around for more than five years, and they have seen the need grow significantly over that time. Normally, they hand out food boxes on the second and fourth Thursday of the month. When they first started, they were giving out around 15 boxes at time. They tell us that number has grown to more than 100.
