David Banks-Imagn Images Brooks Barnhizer will miss the rest of the 2024-25 season with a foot injury, coach Chris Collins announced after Northwestern’s 75-69 loss to Wisconsin on Saturday. Barnhizer, who was ruled out ahead of the game, has suited up for Northwestern for the final time. The senior averaged 17.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.3 steals on 41.4% shooting. He was in the midst of his best season as a Wildcat.

Northwestern Athletics At 1-4 in conference play, Northwestern is in mid-January desperation mode. The softly ringing fire alarm my good friend Ethan Segall mentioned last week is teetering on the edge of turning into a full blown siren. It’s definitely not ideal when Brooks Barnhizer, Northwestern’s premier player, has gone ice cold in his last two games, shooting 6-of-28 from the field as he nears the career 1000-point mark.

@NUMensBball on X Mackey Arena is one of the toughest venues for opposing teams in all of college basketball. For the Wildcats on Sunday, it was borderline impossible. Uneasy from the tip, Northwestern (10-5, 1-3 B1G) sputtered, falling to the No. 20 Boilermakers (11-4, 3-1 B1G) 79-61. Purdue controlled the game’s entire flow, suffocating Northwestern’s offense with some classic Big Ten paint-clogging. The Wildcats’ usual duo of Brooks Barnhizer and Nick Martinelli struggled.

In a true wire-to-wire win, Northwestern never trailed. There was no Dayton level collapse. There was no Butler-like letdown. Nor a split second from being on the wrong end of a Josh Dix-style miracle.

Today, we’ll dive into the backfield and breakdown the running backs from this year. Overall Grade: CIf I was being more generous, it could be a C+. But Northwestern was 17th in the Big Ten in rushing yards — with 18% of the yards on the ground coming from Jack Lausch’s legs.
