When Rachel Stratton-Mills surprised Aaron Baltaytis in the hospital, she almost did not recognize the Division I swimmer. The Northwestern Swimming and Diving coach checked in with Baltaytis every day as he underwent treatment for testicular cancer. He seemed to be the same teenager with the same positive attitude that Stratton-Mills knew well, but phone calls and texts did not reveal the physical effects of multiple rounds of chemotherapy.

@NULax/X There are two kinds of disappointing losses. There is the kind of disappointment that feels hopeless. It follows an inevitable loss. It’s the kind of poor performance that is expected, but a sliver of hope suggests the outcome could be different. There is also the kind of disappointment defined by “almost.” Almost beating them. Almost hanging on. Almost coming back. Northwestern’s 15-12 loss to North Carolina is the latter kind.

nusports.com Northwestern’s steadily held No. 3 position in the national rankings could be threatened by No. 4 Maryland on Saturday. The ‘Cats have given no indication that there is a team more deserving of a top-three slot than them. In fact, sliding in right behind Boston College as the second-ranked team is a real possibility with a match against North Carolina on the horizon. But the Terps are a different team than they were to start the season when they fell to then-No. 6 Syracuse.

When Amonte Hiller revived Northwestern's lacrosse program in 2002, she completely changed the dynamic of the East Coast sport. It's not easy to win a title, and it's not easy to create a dynasty. But Amonte Hiller had a vision from the start.

Northwestern was the Cinderella story of the lacrosse world when it won a national title in 2005. But that championship wasn’t an accident. It was exactly what Kelly Amonte Hiller set out to do in 2002 when she revived the school’s program. https://t.co/1GbpiLEPTP
