Perhaps you were on a search committee and had to meet regularly with a diversity consultant who promised to help root out your implicit biases.

Over the past two years, a wave of legislation has targeted diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at colleges across the nation. Since January 2023 The Chronicle has tracked anti-DEI legislation, finding changes at 213 campuses in 33 states. This has created a chaotic atmosphere at many colleges, because it is often unclear what activities are prohibited. Among the most common targets are diversity offices, mandatory diversity trainings, and the use of diversity statements in hiring.

Adam Briggle is an associate professor and the director of Graduate Studies of UNT’s Philosophy and Religion department. Briggle is the father to a transgender son, which led Child Protective Services to investigate them after Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to consider gender-affirming care for minors as child abuse. The Texas legislature has long attacked transgender people.
