Now, survivor Mick Doleman is telling the full story of how the crew lasted nearly two weeks in hostile seas, and helping give a voice to those who didn't return. On October 13, 1973, Mick Doleman was jolted awake while on the cargo ship Blythe Star. The 44-metre-long steel coastal freighter was on a two-night voyage heading towards King Island off the north-west coast of Tasmania.

Against the dry, arid landscapes of west and central Australia they not only catch your gazing eye, they're also a source of food and water. They can also point you in the right direction if you're lost.
