There’s much excitement around the state this time of year as prep sports are winding down and individuals are celebrated for athletic achievement in many endeavors. For Colorado’s girls golfers, the state competitions have as much to do with the courses they are playing (and the weather) as the swings they put in and the putts they line up, so there’s always a chance that someone unexpected comes out of the woodwork and contends for a state championship.

This past week provided Colorado’s top girls golfers with just a few more opportunities to gain that competitive edge out on courses around the state prior to next week’s regionals, and several took full advantage. Case in point, Air Academy freshman Landry Frost, who went under par at the Broadmoor Golf Club on Wednesday to win the Broadmoor Women’s Open prep event.

By The Associated PressFormer NFL tight end Don Hasselbeck, who won a Super Bowl in his nine-year career and was the father of two NFL quarterbacks, died Monday. He was 70. Hasselbeck’s son, Matt, said his father died after going into cardiac arrest at his home. “He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller,” Matt Hasselbeck wrote on social media.

LAS VEGAS — Nique Clifford scored 24 points and No. 2 seed Colorado State made a Mountain West Championship Tournament-record 12 3s and beat fifth-seeded Boise State, 69-56, on Saturday night for its first title since 2003. Colorado State (25-9) will make its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance on a 10-game win streak. Boise State trailed by 10 points at the half and pulled to within five points during the first minute of the second.
