Peak of Santa Ana winds, wildfire concerns

As Los Angeles County residents are in the process of rebuilding after being hit by last week's horrific series of fires, yet another round of strong winds is heading into Southern California. This week, the Santa Ana winds are expected to hit the region, possibly sparking more fires in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and/or Ventura counties.

A very powerful storm system off the coast of the Northwest U.S. has rapidly intensified, and now it's providing a steady stream of rain and snow in Northern California. This stream is known as an atmospheric river, and it'll hold over Northern California through Thursday and somewhat into Friday. Flood watches, along with numerous other types of weather alerts, are in effect in Northern California, where widespread rain totals over five inches are possible, and perhaps as much as 15 inches.

HOUSTON (KIAH) – The hottest days of the summer are likely behind us now. After a string of days in Houston with highs of 100 or hotter, we expect highs in the 90s for at least the next 10 days. It’ll still feel hotter than 100, especially Thursday with a heat advisory (as opposed to a warning) in effect due to possible feels-like temps as high as 108 to 112 degrees. After Thursday, high pressure eases off a bit, and slightly drier air arrives.

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Houston is in the midst of the hottest temperatures so far this summer. An excessive heat warning is in effect Tuesday and Wednesday as temperatures could reach or exceed 100, but it could feel as hot as 115 degrees. The heat will be a bit less intense by the end of the week, but still hot with little to no rain. I think it’s possible that some very isolated showers and storms get close to our eastern areas the next few days, but most areas remain totally dry.

HOUSTON (KIAH) – The hottest temperatures of the summer are upon us. After three consecutive days with a high of 100 in Houston, I’m calling for 101 Monday and 103 Tuesday. Of course, with the humidity, it will feel hotter. A heat advisory is in effect Monday with potential feels-like temperatures up to 112 degrees. With that, it’s no surprise to see NOAA’s “extreme” heat risk category for Greater Houston Monday. Tuesday’s temps nudge even higher, and again Wednesday it likely reaches 100.

HOUSTON (KIAH) – It could feel as hot as 112 degrees Friday. As bad as that sounds, our heat wave gets turned up another notch over the next couple of days. A heat advisory is in effect for all of Southeast Texas Friday because of a dangerous combination of heat and humidity. Highs will be in the upper 90s in Houston, but it could feel as hot as 108 to 112 degrees during the hottest part of the afternoon. Temperatures rise a bit Saturday through Monday.

HOUSTON (KIAH) – A heat advisory is in effect, again, on Thursday in Southeast Texas with feels-like temperatures as high as 111 degrees. Actual temperatures likely peak in the upper 90s. The heat gets even more intense by the weekend, with daily heat advisories likely continuing at least through Monday. The only hope for relief comes from spotty afternoon showers and thunderstorms that will form along the sea breeze each of the next few days.
