Glacier FarmMedia | MarketsFarm — A respite from tariffs on U.S. imports has resulted in feedlots purchasing more grain as of late, said a trader. Evan Peterson of JGL Commodities in Moose Jaw, Sask. added that the reprieve from tariffs has also allowed cattle to move more freely across the Canada/United States border, creating the need for more grain. “It’s making these guys a little bit comfortable to buy some grain and to put some cattle on the books again too,” he said.

The past week will go down as one of the most erratic in the modern history of global trade. Just one week after United States President Donald Trump announced reciprocal tariffs on goods from the rest of the world, on April 9 he suspended those duties for 90 days, leaving the 10 per cent baseline levy and boosting the markets. After China retaliated by increasing its tariffs on imports of U.S. goods to 84 per cent, Trump returned fire by boosting duties on Chinese goods to 125 per cent.

When United States President Donald Trump announced that nearly every country in the world was subject to new tariffs on April 2, Canada and Mexico weren’t on the list. That’s because the U.S. decided to leave previous tariffs against their neighbours on the books and left products under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement unaffected — for now. For Canada’s canola market, it was the best news in weeks.

The Canadian canola market was hit with a double whammy of sorts on March 7. Hours after trading ended for the day at the Intercontinental Exchange, China announced it was exacting its delayed revenge against Canadian tariffs put in place last year on its electric vehicles, steel and aluminum by imposing 100 per cent tariffs on Canadian canola oil and meal, and other goods including pork and seafood.

Should've drawn for one. I understand their decision, but the risk was greater than the reward.
