PITTSBURGH — Keep the hoodies and long sleeves handy today as temperatures struggle just to get out of the 50s this afternoon. We’ll see gradual clearing throughout the day, but that will set us up for a chilly night tonight. Most areas will dip into the upper 30s, but some frost is expected, especially for areas north and east of Pittsburgh, where lows could dip into the mid-30s. The deeper valleys are most vulnerable as winds there could go calm...a key ingredient for frost formation.

While you’ll need the light jacket at times over the next few days, you won’t need it next week. A ridge of high pressure will take control of the Great Lakes, with the warmest air expected to arrive late next week. There is high confidence in temperatures reaching the 80s at least for a couple of days, with a low (but not zero) chance that we may warm close to 90 degrees before the end of next weekend.

A cold front is pressing in from the north today, which will increase clouds and pop a few showers today, although coverage of rain will remain quite low. Pockets of rain may linger late tonight, but mainly well south and east of Pittsburgh over the higher elevations. The incoming cool air will keep temperatures in the 50s most of Friday as we fight off morning clouds. After a chilly start to Saturday, temperatures will rebound nicely this weekend with plenty of sunshine ahead for mom.

It’s hard to imagine that cleanup efforts continue even eight days after a destructive squall line moved through the area. Now that the stormy pattern is over, we can look back at just how significant the numbers were. For the entire month of April, Allegheny County had 127 storm reports, which included strong winds, hail, and any kind of damage. Of those 127 reports, 91 came from Tuesday, April 29th.
