PITTSBURGH — The American Lung Association’s annual “State of the Air” report says that the air in the Pittsburgh metro area is among the most polluted in the country. The area, which includes Pittsburgh, Weirton and Steubenville, ranked 16th worst particle pollution, returning it to the list of the 25 most polluted cities. It also ranked 12th worst nationwide for year-round particle pollution, with the report saying 2023’s wildfire smoke contributed to poorer air quality.

NEW KENSINGTON, Pa. — Two people were arrested after bags of fentanyl were found near a child’s toys inside a New Kensington home, the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General announced Monday. Desdrene Smith, 64, and Brittany Shelton, 34, are each charged with felony counts of possession with intent to deliver and endangering the welfare of children.

PITTSBURGH — Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh Bishop David Zubik has released a statement on the death of Pope Francis. Francis died Monday at 88, the Vatican announced, a day after blessing thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday. Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to a hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia.

FINDLAY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Two people are dead after an early Saturday morning house fire in Findlay Township. Officials tell Channel 11 that a house fire on Poplar Street, near Steubenville Pike, began around 4:30 a.m. At one point, the home was fully engulfed in flames. We’re told that two people died in the fire. Their identities have not been released, pending next-of-kin notifications. Three police officers on scene received medical treatment.
