OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Lawmakers at the State Capitol voted Wednesday to reject controversial rules proposed by State Superintendent Ryan Walters. The bipartisan Senate Administrative Rules Committee voted 6-1 on a resolution that would remove two key rules: Requiring public schools to ask families for proof of U.S. Citizenship during school enrollment, and requiring teachers to take a U.S. Naturalization test.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Governor Kevin Stitt announced he vetoed six bills Tuesday that crossed his desk. One of those bills was House Bill 1137, which would eliminate the need for OSBI to make a mandatory request for federal funding to “address the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons in the State of Oklahoma.”It was authored by Rep. Ronald Stewart (D-Tulsa) and backed on the Senate side by Sen. Darrell Weaver (R-Moore), who is a former law enforcement agent.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – A bill to ban the use of state resources towards diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at Oklahoma universities and colleges is headed for the governor’s desk. Senate Bill 796 was authored by Senator Adam Pugh (R-Edmond) and was carried on the House side by Rep. Denise Crosswhite Hader (R-Piedmont). It passed off the House floor with a 77-18 vote in favor of the measure. But not before a heated debate.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Oklahoma legislators said they were “frustrated” by the latest financial uncertainty with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (ODMHSAS). Commissioner Allie Friesen spoke before a Select Committee to review the department’s finances on Monday. The latest concern was about how the department would make payroll through the end of June. “Come May 21st, we will need payroll support,” said Friesen.
