A gentle melodic guitar draws you into the softly sung, fuzzed-out track “Canary,” the debut from the Santa Maria-based three-piece band “Avalynn.” The song was released on Mar. 15 from the mind of Steven Hubert on drums, alongside Michael Espinosa and Andrew Garcia who rotate between guitar, bass and vocals. The band emerged suddenly with its well-crafted yet underpromoted single, which was followed by a period of inactivity.

Morro Bay artist Ross Hale speaks of a vision. He’s walking down a dark city street late at night, when he hears the faint sound of music. It draws him down a stairway, through a door and into a room where an eight-piece jazz band is performing on stage. Hale offers this vision as context to his most recent artistic endeavor, The Jazz Band.

“Big Dog” is a clean slate for Swede and Skogen. It takes a step away from how Erik Methot was used to writing songs and marks a definitive start of what the project is now. Along with Ben Schulze and Cameron Zirbel, the trio wrote and recorded the latest release at Zirbel’s home in San Diego, about five hours south of where they gained a following playing shows in San Luis Obispo. The band last played in San Luis Obispo in September, opening for Drugdealer at SLO Brew Rock.

Perhaps summer isn’t the best time for live shows in San Luis Obispo, as flocks of Cal Poly students head home and vacationers spend their time at the beach. But luckily, there’s always the remaining crowd of older students and locals that gives life to the deserted college town. While the Fremont Theater was notably less than sold out for Enjoy’s stop in San Luis Obispo on their West Coast tour, the crowd was always moving for an evening of punk music on August 18.

Babe Rainbow at SLO Brew – May 12Babe Rainbow made a quick return to San Luis Obispo after their last performance in October with a sold-out performance at SLO Brew Rock on May 12. As the group began playing, three tall scrolls standing behind the musicians were illuminated by various still images from film slides. Behind the projections was visual artist Dominic Santos, a sort of hidden star of the show.
