City Farm SLO hosted its third annual Sheep Shearing Shindig, inviting the San Luis Obispo community to interact with local agriculture. The festival celebrated the history of the Navajo-Churro sheep with live music, food vendors, wool spinning and live sheep shearing demonstrations. City Farm Board Member Claire Tuohey-Mote said the Sheep Shearing Shindig is an opportunity for people to learn more about local farming.

Wrapping up National Bike month, San Luis Obispo kicked it off with a celebration on May 1st. San Luis Obispo residents headed to the Hub SLO for the event, where they were able to part courtesy of a “bike valet.” The kick-off party included food, trivia and a bike sumo competition organized by SLO Regional Rideshare. Mallory Jenkins, the SLO Regional Rideshare Program Manager, said that this was a big year for them. During the pandemic, Rideshare wasn’t able to host as many community gatherings.

During their fifth year at Cal Poly, over 100 architecture seniors participated in the annual “Detail Show” on April 17. Throughout the academic year, each student worked on an individual project and had the chance to present a detailed drawing or model of their project at the show. Architecture senior Thomas Rychman created a model of a city block for his project.

Cal Poly math professor Dylan Retsek secured a spot on the U.S. National Paraclimbing Team. A year ago, Retsek was an avid recreational climber, but after a chance meeting with paraclimbing champion Maureen Beck, he felt inspired to join the U.S. National Team. He began more intense training that involved three hour climbing sessions every week, core conditioning and stretching three times a week and weights twice a week.

The Mustang Film Society is a new club on Cal Poly’s campus that started in fall 2023. For students who want to pursue film after they graduate, interdisciplinary studies and liberal arts (ISLA) associate professor, Doctor Emily Ryalls, wanted to create a place for these students to gather since there is no film major at Cal Poly.
