City Farm SLO Celebrates Its Third Annual Sheep Shearing Shindig

City Farm SLO hosted its third annual Sheep Shearing Shindig, inviting the San Luis Obispo community to interact with local agriculture. The festival celebrated the history of the Navajo-Churro sheep with live music, food vendors, wool spinning and live sheep shearing demonstrations. City Farm Board Member Claire Tuohey-Mote said the Sheep Shearing Shindig is an opportunity for people to learn more about local farming.

Wrapping up National Bike month, San Luis Obispo kicked it off with a celebration on May 1st. San Luis Obispo residents headed to the Hub SLO for the event, where they were able to part courtesy of a “bike valet.” The kick-off party included food, trivia and a bike sumo competition organized by SLO Regional Rideshare. Mallory Jenkins, the SLO Regional Rideshare Program Manager, said that this was a big year for them. During the pandemic, Rideshare wasn’t able to host as many community gatherings.
Architecture seniors show off their work at the annual Detail Show

During their fifth year at Cal Poly, over 100 architecture seniors participated in the annual “Detail Show” on April 17. Throughout the academic year, each student worked on an individual project and had the chance to present a detailed drawing or model of their project at the show. Architecture senior Thomas Rychman created a model of a city block for his project.

Cal Poly math professor Dylan Retsek secured a spot on the U.S. National Paraclimbing Team. A year ago, Retsek was an avid recreational climber, but after a chance meeting with paraclimbing champion Maureen Beck, he felt inspired to join the U.S. National Team. He began more intense training that involved three hour climbing sessions every week, core conditioning and stretching three times a week and weights twice a week.
Cal Poly's Mustang Film Society creates a community for film enthusiast

The Mustang Film Society is a new club on Cal Poly’s campus that started in fall 2023. For students who want to pursue film after they graduate, interdisciplinary studies and liberal arts (ISLA) associate professor, Doctor Emily Ryalls, wanted to create a place for these students to gather since there is no film major at Cal Poly.
Phil Collen celebrates 40 years of Pyromania at Boo Boo Records

Def Leppard fans were treated to an intimate showing when guitarist Phil Collen took the stage in Boo Boo Records for an in-store performance and signing event in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the band’s “Pyromania” album. The British rock musician played a short set and signed copies of the anniversary reissues on April 22 at Boo Boo Records. Early birds who pre-ordered the re-releases got guaranteed entry. Hula Hurt attended with her mother and says she’s been a lifelong Def Leppard fan.

Nine years ago, when Filmmaker Randi Barros was a new professor at Cal Poly, she was approached by the former Director of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival, Wendy Eidson. The film festival had been popular except in one demographic — students. Eidson asked if she had any ideas for getting students in the festival’s seats. “So I said, “Well, we make films in our class, will there be any chance we could show them at the film festival?’” Barros said.
New temporary interactive pavillion in Poly Canyon unites students across different majors

At this year’s annual Design Village competition in Poly Canyon, visitors will be able to experience a new and interactive structure. The Biophilic Instrument Pavilion (BIP) will provide people with a unique visual and audio experience. According to Anita Shanbhogue, architecture senior who worked on the project, the structure provides visitors with an immersive experience.

On April 10, over 2,000 Cal Poly and Cuesta College students flooded into Cotton Rosser Rodeo Complex for Cal Poly’s 82 annual Poly Royal Rodeo dressed in cowboy boots and hats. For business administration senior Maddie Freund, this is her third year coming to Poly Royal and attending student night. “It’s super exciting,” Freund said.
